Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under the direction of the Assistant Supervisor, oversees and supervises employees in the traffic sign division. Performs work necessary for the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of all traffic sign systems, including the use of computerized sign fabrication programs and systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in all the installation of signs, poles, traffic control devices, flexible delineator posts, in street pedestrian delineators, all traffic sign control devices and appurtenances.
  • Installs, removes, testing and wiring all solar powered electric city-owned speed radar feedback sign systems, Rapid Flash Pedestrian beacons, and signs enhanced with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). 
  • Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment as defined by the manufacturer’s guidelines and requirements.
  • Instructs in the field and acts as a group leader.
  • Instructs and assists in the transport and placement of Electronic-Display Variable Message Sign/Systems (VMS).   
  • Performs on-site training and instructional courses for traffic sign employees in all areas of traffic sign installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Maintains record of all completed work performed by work crews.
  • Assists in the inspection of pavement markings. 
  • Conducts daily inspection of vehicles and equipment for proper safety compliance and operation.  
  • Assists the supervisor in evaluating crew and individual performances.
  • Assumes daily operations duties of the Assistant Supervisor in their absence.
  • Updates and maintains an inventory of related tools and equipment. Assists in the preparation of requisitions and purchase orders.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner of Transportation or designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least three (3) year of fulltime, or equivalent part time, experience in related work to the fabrications, installation, and production of signs, plus traffic control devices and appurtenances.
  • Computer skills in the operation of sign fabrication software.
  • Able to read and comprehend engineering drawings.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the position.
  • Must have working knowledge of the City of Boston Transportation Department Rules and Regulations.
  • Certificate requirements:
    • Must possess a current and valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
    • Massachusetts Department of Public Safety hoisting engineers license Class 1B and 2C required.
    • Ability to obtain a CDL (commercial driver’s license) within one year of hire is required.
