Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under the general supervision of the Commissioner of Inspectional Services and under the immediate direction of the Chief Building Inspector/or the Supervisor of Inspections, performs inspections for buildings and structures or anything attached to or connected to therewith as to structural soundness for conformance with all applicable codes and ordinances.

Responsibilities:

  • These include but are not limited to the Massachusetts State Building Code (the IBC and all supplemental ICC codes) and its amendments, NEPA chapters 13,72 and 101, and the Boston Zoning Code.
  • The inspector shall be responsible for examining structures within his jurisdiction for structural soundness, including requiring reports of any condition he/she deems as a potentially unsafe condition and/or illegal occupancies, and report to his superiors.
  • Examines premises for compliance with the Zoning Act.
  • Examines buildings damaged by fire to determine the extent of damage.
  • Submits comprehensive reports of such inspections; checks and reports on work progress of building construction, alteration or repair, and shoring or demolition of buildings and structures.
  • In addition, the position requires investigation of complaints for violations of said codes and prosecution through the legal system when necessary.  
  • Responsible for recording daily work assignments and retaining records relative to his/her duties.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicant must have at least five (5) years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design or a two (2) year associate's degree in building construction and design.
  • A bachelor's degree or master's degree in Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • Applicant must be a Certified Building Official or attain certification by the State within 12 months of hiring date.  If/once certified the inspector must acquire the required CEU units to maintain status of Certified Building Official.
  • Experience with all types (high-rise, commercial, and residential) and methods (masonry, steel, concrete, and wood) of construction is required. 
  • Sufficient familiarity with the principles of building construction to be able to determine whether a building is unsafe or dangerous.
  • Thorough knowledge of the State Building code (the IBC and all supplemental ICC codes), its amendments, the Boston Zoning Code, and NFPA code chapters 13, 72, and 101 with respect to building and structure required.
  • Ability to write comprehensive and accurate reports of examinations made of such buildings and structures required.
  • Thorough knowledge of sheet metal regulations.
  • Applicant must be able to read plans and specifications for conformance with the above codes.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Familiarity with the Hansen software system and various computer programs is preferred.
  • A multi-lingual candidate is also preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
