Overview:

The mission of the Boston Fire Department (BFD) is to manage, maintain, repair, and provide security for BFD’s municipal buildings, including Headquarters and BFD Firehouses; to preserve the useful life of City facilities and reduce operating costs through effective preventative maintenance measures.

Under the direction of the Buildings System Engineer, the Maintenance Mechanic (Plumber) will perform a wide variety of plumbing and maintenance work to support the efficient and effective functioning of BFD’s buildings.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and repair plumbing systems and fixtures in BFD’s municipal buildings, including Headquarters and BFD Firehouses.
  • Test pipe systems, fix leaks, and perform preventive maintenance as required.
  • Maintain, clean, repair, and diagnose problems with interior and exterior drains, lines, and fixtures.
  • Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, fixtures, and other parts, such as sinks and toilets.
  • Use hand and power tools in the performance of plumbing duties.
  • Prepare appropriate departmental records regarding work accomplished, tool inventories, and significant events during a shift.
  • Perform repairs to surrounding finished areas following any required demolition.
  • Coordinate with personnel in other City Departments as necessary to perform the tasks above.
  • Monitor the performance of private contractors as necessary.
  • Testing and repair of anti-siphon (Backflow) devices.
  • Isolate and drain down all exterior water systems for freeze protection.
  • Responsible for completing all Preventative Maintenance[CR(1] and record keeping assigned to their area of responsibility, reviewing and updating information as necessary.
  • Submit work orders for all work performed.
  • Make recommendations to their supervisor as necessary on the performance of equipment.
  • Monitor inventory and ensure adequate supplies are readily available for maintenance work.
  • Ensure that safe working conditions are maintained in all areas under their control.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have at least four to five (4-5) years of paid experience as a plumber.
  • Must have a knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials commonly used in the plumbing and maintenance trades and be able to use materials involved with installation, removal, maintenance, extension, and alteration of plumbing systems.
  • Physical ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds and maneuver a minimum 6-foot ladder.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints and knowledge of Massachusetts plumbing codes.
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand the English language.
  • Experience with Cloud Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) and ability to utilize a digital work order management process.
  • Monitor Cloud Maintenance Management Software (CMMS ) for work order queue and update work status to completion.
  • A Commonwealth of Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber's License is required, and a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Master Plumber's License is preferred.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, NEC, NFC, and Life Safety codes.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
