The mission of the City of Boston Assessing Department is to accurately collect data, assess property at its full and fair cash value, and provide prompt and courteous service to the public. The Assessing Department is a leader in municipal valuation and seeks to maintain that status by attracting talented experience to our core staffing.

 

Job Description:

 

Under the direction of department counsel or another supervisor as assigned, the City of Boston Assessing Department seeks a paralegal to research points of law, write legal memoranda, compile documents, file, and perform such other duties as assigned.

 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare documents and cases necessary for Appellate Tax Board hearings.
  • Assist in drafting legal motions, discovery requests, and official correspondence.
  • Research legal issues.
  • Assist attorney in hearing preparation.
  • Perform jurisdictional review for appeals.
  • Sort, analyze, and process case material.
  • Update and support department staff via reports and other correspondence specific to issues and cases.
  • Attend meetings and assist in responding to any inquiries.
  • Respond to constituent inquiries.
  • Gather information needed for and draft responses to public records requests.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the City, Appellate Tax Board, and other parties as directed.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to requests for assistance on additional projects.
  • Be receptive to new ideas and respond to changing conditions and departmental needs.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Paralegal Certificate.
  • Studying towards a Juris Doctorate Degree is a plus.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Westlaw is a plus.

 

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED

 

Terms:

Union/Grade/Salary Plan:  SENA/MM1- 4

Hours per week: 35
