Overview:

Under the guidance of the Mayor's Office of Food Justice Deputy Director and in collaboration with the Environment, Energy & Open Space (EEOS) Communications and Community Engagement Directors, the Partnership and Community Engagement Manager is responsible for (1) Building a partner and community engagement strategy to achieve Office of Food Justice's (OFJ) goals (2) communicating OFJ's goals, strategies and campaigns to residents and partner organizations (3) designing communications campaigns that support OFJ's goals to shift the food system while addressing food insecurity, including reducing stigma related to inequitable food access and addressing the food system's impact on climate, (4) engaging partners and residents in policy campaigns (5) supporting and elevating partner organization's work and (6) effectively communicating the Mayor's Food Justice Agenda, the administration's work, and other OFJ initiatives to residents.


Background:
The mission of the Mayor's Office of Food Justice (OFJ) is to build a food system that is equitable, resilient, sustainable, and just. In pursuit of this mission, OFJ works to expand equitable access to nutritious food with respect to affordability, physical accessibility, and cultural connectedness, support Boston's food economy, and promote environmentally sustainable and resilient food production.

 

Building on the work of the city's previous Office of Food Access works to embed food systems and racial equity approaches into existing food access programming, and to pursue whole-of-government strategies, in partnership with GrowBoston, that leverage city resources and partnerships to shift the city and region's food system, reduce food insecurity and address the food system's impact on climate. This includes close partnerships with other city and state departments, along with facilitating a community of practice for organizations, businesses, and entities in the city that are addressing food insecurity and inequitable food access by developing a new food system.

Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with Office of Food Justice (OFJ) leadership, lead a network of food justice, food access and food systems organizations across the City.
  • Partner with OFJ Director, Deputy Director, Environment, Energy & Open Space (EEOS) Community Engagement Director, and community organizations to develop OFJ’s partner and community engagement strategy, including sequencing and coordination with existing OFJ programs.
  • Support OFJ and GrowBoston programs to increase equitable access to healthy food via increasing spaces to grow food in Boston.
  • Partner with OFJ & GrowBoston team members to promote and advance strategic initiatives in support of the City’s food justice agenda.
  • Oversee the development of initiatives to expand resident leadership in promoting and developing food access strategies for their neighborhoods.
  • Develop and oversee OFJ’s internal and external communications strategy, campaigns, and/or messaging in partnership with Cabinet and Mayor’s office communications staff.
  • Design and facilitate meetings and workshops amongst internal and external partners.
  • Support narrative development and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to inform internal and external partners and residents about OFJ’s, grantees’, and partners’ work to build a resilient, just, equitable, and sustainable food system.
  • Develop system map and protocols to ensure OFJ, City Departments and other partners are aligning services and addressing gaps in service.
  • Ensure residents are receiving updated information about food access programs, benefits, and other resources offered by the City, state, and private entities.
  • Serve as the Public Information Officer for OFJ sitting on the EEOS Communications Team and with the Mayor’s Office, Press, Digital, Advance and Speechwriting offices, other Cabinets and Department Heads to ensure City food related communications and initiatives align with food justice principles.
  • Oversee OFJ’s public-facing print and digital content, including website, email newsletter, and social media accounts, in partnership with other City communications.
  • Implement evaluation protocols and metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of community engagement and communications strategies.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Three + (3+) years of full-time experience in the field of community engagement, community organizing, advocacy, communications, participatory research, or service delivery. A Master’s degree in the above-mentioned fields is preferred and may be substituted for one (1) year of required experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective engagement strategies.
  • Experience working with low-wealth communities and with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, show flexibility, and prioritize competing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects.
  • Experience integrating data and storytelling into communications content.
  • Experience working in diverse communities, including multiple generations (seniors, youth, working adults), as well as across ethnic and racial communities.
  • Experience with social media strategy and implementation embedded within broader engagement strategies.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and think strategically.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Zoom, and Microsoft Office, including Excel and Google Sheets, Google Forms, Survey Monkey, Survey Gizmo, and Canvas.
  • Excellent attention to detail and nuance, stellar judgment, and ability to navigate through conflict.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends.
  • Multilingual applicants are strongly encouraged.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
