Overview:

The City of Boston Streets Cabinet is seeking a highly motivated Senior Vision Zero Project Planner to work on projects that will realize the City’s vision to create streets and public spaces that are safe, multimodal, and resilient.

 

The position requires considerable project management, technical, and managerial skills related to multimodal street design projects. Ideal candidates will have a passion for transportation justice and improving transportation through public service.


Reporting to the Director of Planning, Streets Cabinet, or their designee.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages multiple spot, corridor, and district design projects from concept to construction-ready and creatively solves multimodal transportation problems.
  • Organizes and prioritizes workload and is proactive in identifying project needs/requirements. Works independently in addressing complex tasks in a time-sensitive environment, seeking guidance as necessary.
  • Directs the work of consultant teams, including scope, schedule, task prioritization, budget parameters, and city-agency coordination.
  • Collaborates with a diverse range of public agencies and advocacy groups to design and implement new bicycle and pedestrian facilities to improve safety.
  • Analyzes a wide range of transportation data and manages the completion of technical analyses, feasibility studies, and other transportation reports.
  • Manages community outreach and engagement activities. 
  • Prepares activities, graphics, presentations, brochures, and other materials to ensure consistent and appropriate feedback loops with the public. 
  • Analyzes public feedback and ensures it is factored into project designs.
  • Mentors and supervises professional staff. 
  • Develops goals, documents performance, provides performance feedback, and formally evaluates their work.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or technical experience in urban planning, regional planning, land use planning, or transportation planning, of which at least three (3) years must have been in a professional capacity, and of which at least one (1) year must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • A bachelor’s degree in urban planning, regional planning or transportation, or a related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. A master’s degree in the above-mentioned field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience. Supervisory experience may not be substituted.
  • Demonstrated ability to take projects from concept to implementation strongly preferred. 
  • Advanced knowledge of NACTO’s (National Association of City Transportation Officials) Urban Bikeway, Street, and Transit Design guides, MassDOT’s Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide, Boston Complete Streets Guidelines and related standard details and requirements, MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices), and relevant AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials)  and FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) guidelines.
  • Demonstrated record working in multi-disciplinary outcome-oriented teams. 
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and to act in a professional manner with co-workers, outside agencies, and members of the public.
  • Proven research, writing, oral, and graphic presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with GIS mapping, graphic design, data analysis and maintenance, and website development. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, and Google Suite.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese, and Vietnamese).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
