Overview:

This is a temporary, two-year position.  TNC Grant-funded.

 

The Boston Transportation Department (BTD) is seeking a Diversion Coordinator/Transit Operations Planner to develop and oversee programs to manage major transportation diversions and support transit operations planning.

 

The Diversion Coordinator/Transit Operations Planner will support the City of Boston's public transportation system by managing the response to planned and emergency MBTA subway diversions. This role will work closely with the MBTA to plan and execute subway diversions, track work, and other operational changes to ensure minimal disruption to riders. This role will also work on transit operations issues that impact the City's transit network and support innovative solutions to day-to-day operations issues.

 

Reporting to the Director of Planning, Streets Cabinet, or designee, the Diversion Coordinator/Transit Operations Planner is part of the Streets Cabinet Transit Team and works with city staff, partner agencies, key stakeholders, and members of the public to create and implement innovative approaches to manage the changing transportation landscape.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates MBTA subway diversions, track work, and operational changes impacting service through Boston.
  • Creates mitigation plans to minimize the impact of diversions on ridership and city transportation patterns.
  • Develops diversion and closure schedules in collaboration with MBTA construction and maintenance teams.
  • Communicates upcoming diversions, schedule changes, and service adjustments to internal and external stakeholders through regular updates, meetings and other forms of communication.
  • Works closely with the city departments and agencies to adjust city services during shutdowns.
  • Analyzes data and rider feedback on diversions to identify success and areas for improvement.
  • Stays up-to-date on all MBTA capital projects and maintenance needs that require operational changes.
  • Manages consultant contracts related to diversion and operations planning.
  • Performs related duties as assigned to support transit operations with Boston.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Four plus (4+) years experience in public transportation operations and/or construction coordination.
  • A bachelor's degree in city planning, engineering, or a related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and collaboration skills to work with MBTA, city officials, and the public.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications, and Google Suite.
  • Customer service oriented to minimize the impact on riders during diversions.
  • Data analysis skills to evaluate and enhance diversion performance.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of public agencies, private consultants, and community groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to take project from concept to implementation strongly preferred.
  • Proven research, writing, oral and graphic presentation skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

 

Boston Residency Required.
