Overview:

The Mayor’s Office is seeking an experienced, thoughtful, and creative Graphic Designer and Digital Strategist who is passionate about visually communicating the important work of the City of Boston on Mayor Michelle Wu’s social media platforms.

 

The Graphic Designer and Digital Strategist will report to the Mayor’s Digital Communications Director and support the Mayor’s Digital Team in advancing Mayor Wu's vision by producing engaging and compelling digital art, social media content, event collateral, print materials, and more to inform and serve the diverse communities of Boston.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize and design visually compelling graphics aligned with the Mayor's brand style, priorities, and communication objectives and  produce excellent social media content made for today’s internet.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive design strategies and leverage your social media expertise to develop and drive campaigns across platforms, including Instagram Reels and TikTok.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Communications Director, public information officers, and staff from across City departments to create visual content that aligns with the Mayor’s communication goals and the City of Boston brand.
  • Develop engaging social media strategies that inspire people to pause their scroll, comment, share, and feel more connected to City government.
  • Produce and publish social media content that informs, serves, and resonates with Boston residents.
  • Conceptualize, organize, and contribute to short and long-term design projects and social media campaigns showcasing the work of the City of Boston, its residents, and the Mayor’s initiatives.
  • Coordinate design projects with City departments and external partners, ensuring brand consistency across various media.
  • Stay ahead of social media and design trends and introduce innovative approaches to elevate the presence of the City of Boston, its departments, partners, and the Mayor online.
  • Assist in photography and video projects as needed to create cohesive multimedia productions.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

Required

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional graphic design and/or social media management experience, with a portfolio showcasing your ability to create visually compelling digital content.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Experience with building and managing web pages and using Drupal.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of distilling complex ideas into content suitable for social media.
  • Highly organized, capable of managing multiple projects at once, with a readiness to adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and in rapid-response situations, including after 5PM and on weekends as needed
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Desire to be a part of a dedicated team of professionals who support one another, treat each other with respect, and share the same goal of delivering for the people of Boston.

 

Preferred

  • Past experience in government or political work, journalism, activism, or organizing.
  • Experience with social media management and producing a variety of social media content.
  • Proficiency in Adobe After Effects and motion graphics animation.
  • Familiarity with Facebook Creator Studio, Slack, Google Drive, and project management tools such as Trello and Asana.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English.
