This is a provisional appointment.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Responsible for collecting all taxes, fees, fines, charges and other sums due the City of Boston with particular emphasis on delinquent accounts.

Responsibilities:

  • To receive any tax, assessment, account, debt or claim payable to the City of Boston. 
  • To give notice of, serve, and execute any warrant committed by the Collector. 
  • Answers taxpayer's written correspondence, personal (on-site) and telephone inquiries.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of fulltime, or equivalent part-time, experience in office clerical work, preferably in work whose duties included customer service and/or collections.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws and City of Boston policies and procedures (e.g., Motor Vehicle and Boat Excise tax, Real Estate and Personal Property tax, Tax Title, Boat Mooring, etc.) pertaining to this position preferred.
  • Ability to prepare statistical reports and relate complex oral and written instruction. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with other employees and the public. 
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of office management preferred.  
  • Proven competency in the use of personal computers and related software (i.e., Microsoft Windows, Office Suite).
  • Competency in the use of MUNIS Tax Billing and Collection system preferred. 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
