Overview:

The Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement (MOIA) works to strengthen the ability of immigrants and Boston’s diverse cultural and linguistic communities to fully participate in the economic, civic, social, and cultural life of Boston. Under the direction of a project manager, the Community Organizer for New Arrivals will focus on engaging with Boston’s newest immigrant residents to learn from, listen to, and lean on their lived experiences to identify their most pressing needs and to utilize organizing tactics and techniques to identify and address current gaps and inequalities in the existing system.

 

Community Organizing: Community organizing is the practice of identifying and developing leaders to create spaces for them to engage with local stakeholders to advance local issues of concern. Organizers can build relationships with impacted community members and serve as mentors to guide them through civic endeavors, tactics, and techniques that provide a voice for historically underrepresented communities. This role in particular focuses on new arrivals and provides an opportunity to educate and engage the City of Boston’s newest residents as they learn about the role of local government.

 

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Project Manager for New Arrivals:

  • Develop and enhance MOIA’s relationships with new immigrant arrivals, identify their needs, and work with MOIA team members and community partners to provide resources as needed.
  • Attend neighborhood and community meetings to learn more about the everyday challenges and issues faced new immigrant arrivals.
  • Foster relationships with key immigrant leaders throughout the City via 1:1 meetings and ongoing relationship building.
  • Enhance relationships with immigrant-led community-based organizations that are already working to provide services to new arrivals.
  • Identify emerging immigrant leaders and work to develop the skills and techniques needed to become advocates for themselves and their communities.
  • Serve as a key contact for an interdepartmental City working group by providing on-the-ground insight and observations of the new arrivals’ experience.
  • Note the impact of current gaps and barriers in accessing resources and services for new arrivals and offer insight into ways to bridge these gaps for impacted community members.
  • Participate in regular office responsibilities, including phone coverage.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, attend, and support meetings as needed.
  • Implement an outreach plan to reach new migrants and their allies in Boston utilizing both online and offline tools (a significant percentage of the Organizer’s time will be spent in the field, conducting outreach and building community institutional relationships to generate new contacts and members).
  • Regularly tracks information on new leaders, field interactions, and participation.
  • Conduct regular follow-up communication with residents.
  • Think creatively about existing campaigns and coalitions and consider how immigrant leaders can meaningfully contribute.
  • Develop leaders who can strategize, empathize, and organize with impacted immigrant community members.
  • Integrate veteran and emerging immigrant leaders to participate in local, regional, and statewide campaigns.
  • Identify and cultivate partnerships with ally organizations and represent MOIA on relevant coalitions in Massachusetts.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have at least three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in social work, community organizing, teaching/coaching, candidate or issue-based campaigns, or be able to demonstrate a strong personal passion and desire to engage in the work. Bachelor’s degree can be substituted for two (2) year of the required experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal skills.
  • Ability to organize and inspire cooperation and collaboration across racial and socioeconomic groups.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Awareness of the lived experience of immigrants in Boston and the US.
  • A general understanding of how local, state, and national governments operate.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred (additional languages a plus).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate evening and weekend events.
  • Detail-oriented, excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to plan workflow and multitask.
  • Experience with Google Microsoft Office Workspace tools and video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.) helpful.
