Overview:

Under the direction of the Teen Technology Coordinator, provides technology-based programming and instruction for teens in Teen Central at the Central Library in Copley Square. 

Supports the Teen Team programming efforts, including implementation, outreach, and curriculum development with a focus on innovation, and learning.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Assists teens in the use of a variety of library-owned creative technology equipment and software e.g., computers, 3D printers, scanners, graphic design, video and audio editing, music-making etc.
  • Works with the Teen Technology Coordinator on the development and execution of daily operational procedures for the efficient running of the Technology Lab in Teen Central.
  • Works with the Teen Technology Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and the Teen Central staff as needed to provide tech-based work and volunteer opportunities for teens at the library.
  • Works closely with the Teen Technology Coordinator to create and deliver innovative activities that promote digital literacy to teens.
  • Together with other Teen Central staff, assists in the development of digital content for display and interactive installations in Teen Central.
  • Assists in researching, evaluating, and selecting software and hardware for Teen Central.
  • Works with the Training Coordinator and Community Learning to provide training for staff and the public on new and existing technologies.
  • Develops and implements technology programming at remote locations for underserved populations including but not limited to those who are unable or unwilling to come to Teen Central.
  • Recommends and/or assists in planning changes in technology programming for teens at the Central Library.
  • Provides instruction to increase teens’ knowledge of technology in the Central Library.
  • Covers public service desks in Teen Central as assigned.
  • Participates in relevant teen and technology organizations to maintain up-to-date knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of teen technology programming.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

 

 

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

 

  • Education – High School Graduate or equivalent; Associate degree from a recognized college or university is preferred.  A certification from a reputable site (for example: a college or university, MOOCs, LinkedIn Learning, edX, Coursera) in makerspace technology may be substituted for education.   In exceptional instances, specialized education, training and/or experience may be substituted for part or all the educational requirements. 
  • Experience – Two years of experience working with or supervising teens. Knowledge of technology, creative software, digital media development software and basic internet technology. 3 years library experience desirable.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for customer service and strong ability to communicate and to collaborate successfully with staff, patrons, and external partners of all age levels.
  • Identifies, plans, and prioritizes job responsibilities and tasks; assists in implementing project timelines.
  • Demonstrates initiative and appropriate independent decision-making skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and innovatively.
  • Strong oral and written communication and organizational skills, including public speaking ability.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with graphic design, audio and video editing, and podcasting software such as Adobe Photoshop, Premier Pro, Audition and Illustrator, GarageBand, Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, and Audacity.
  • World Language skills desirable.
  • Willingness to work a public service schedule.
  • Residency - Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
  • CORI - Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
