Overview:

The Environment Department Communications Manager leads the digital, print, and outreach communications to enhance environmental justice and quality of life in Boston by protecting air, water, climate, and land resources. The Communications Manager helps to craft a narrative and communications strategy to help the City of Boston achieve carbon neutrality while working to mitigate and prepare for the effects of climate change, including flooding, sea level rise, and extreme weather.

 

The Manager reports to the Director of Communications for the Mayor’s Cabinet of Environment, Energy, and Open Space and to the Commissioner of the Environment Department. The Manager will work closely with the Carbon Neutrality, Climate Resilience, Environmental Quality, and Energy teams to effectively communicate department policies and initiatives, and develop engagement activities. The Communications Manager will also collaborate with other City departments on relevant programs and interact with all segments of the Boston community.

 

In collaboration with the Director of Communications for the Cabinet, the manager will evaluate the efficacy of programs and will recommend and implement changes that increase participation in and compliance with departmental goals, policies, and programs.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Manages the communications strategy and implementation in conjunction with the Environment Department staff. 
  • Serves as the department’s Public Information Officer and coordinates all media relations with the Director of Communications for the Mayor’s Cabinet of Environment, Energy, and Open Space.
  • Collaborates with the Mayor’s Office on press releases and editorials, interview briefings, media pitches, and stories.
  • Supports planning and organization of events and press conferences. 
  • Works closely with staff throughout the Environment Department to coordinate and execute campaigns, programs, and events to further the City's carbon neutrality, resilience and environmental justice goals.
  • Manages all social media channels and adjusts strategy accordingly to the latest trends as well as managing the Department’s newsletter and distribution.
  • Creates graphic and video content for social media and flyers for distribution that align with the City’s brand. 
  • Oversees and leads website development for the Environment Department's diverse initiatives.
  • Manages communications interns and fellows.
  • Improves program efficacy by analyzing social media and traditional outreach metrics and adjusting content accordingly. 
  • Supports other departments’ climate-related efforts including Green New Deal messaging, recycling and compost programs, Parks and Recreation, active transportation, etc.
  • Develops campaigns to reach critical sectors to maximize participation in the City's sustainability programs.
  • Serves as the Language Access & Communications liaison to ensure accessible communications in the City’s most frequently spoken languages. 
  • Seeks and organizes professional development opportunities related to department-wide communications strategy.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

 

  • At least three (3) years of full time, or equivalent part-time, experience in communications, marketing, journalism, media relations, and/or digital strategy.
  • A bachelor’s degree is highly preferred in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
  • A master's degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience
  • Demonstrated management of more than one full-time employee.
  • Demonstrated management experience is preferred
  • Experience with event planning and procurement is a plus
  • Strong verbal communication skills, writing, and presentation skills
  • The ability to write for diverse audiences
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work with diverse interests and backgrounds
  • Project management and collaboration across teams
  • Strong program management, performance management and social campaign analysis skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks 
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, energy, creativity, and entrepreneurship skills preferred
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job
  • Knowledge with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to test new ideas and take creative approaches to problem solving
  • Strong knowledge of Boston's neighborhoods and communities

Boston residency required.
