Overview:

Under the supervision of the Director of Operations & Licensing and in partnership with the Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion, Public Improvement Commission, Office of Economic Development, Boston Transportation Department, Public Works, and the Inspectional Services Department, the Outdoor Dining & Licensing Specialist is responsible for serving as the primary contact in the Licensing Board for the license extension requests, reviews, and updates related to outdoor dining and other Licensing Board licenses.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage, review, approve, and conduct follow up with outdoor dining applicants on behalf of the Licensing Board.
  • Prepare for and support any Licensing Board hearings associated with outdoor dining requests, including licensed premise extensions, entertainment, and disciplinary hearings.
  • Support Licensees with application questions and follow-ups.
  • Manage complaints and concerns received by the Licensing Board, 311, and the outdoor dining team email and conduct relevant follow-up.
  • Work with other Licensing staff that processes Special One Day applications and One Time Entertainment licenses.
  • Work closely with the Outdoor Dining Program Manager, Restaurant Program Assistant, and Licensed Premise Unit on all matters related to outdoor dining.
  • Conduct occasional site visits with the Outdoor Dining team and the License Premise Unit as needed.
  • Assist the Licensing Board team with license renewal applications and administrative tasks.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of relevant experience in licensing or project management is preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, business, marketing, finance, or a related field preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. Appropriate educational substitutions may be made.
  • Preferable if candidate has good knowledge of departmental rules and regulations relative to the processing and issuance of licenses pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 138 and 140 and the Rules and Regulations of the Alcoholic Beverages and Control Commission.
  • Familiarity with Boston’s neighborhoods and direct experience dealing with neighborhood businesses’ needs preferred.
  • Strong customer service skills, including rapid and quality follow-through.
  • Strong negotiation and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead, strategize, and problem solve.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of city services and permitting processes.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills, including MS Office, Google Suite, and experience with other field related programs/software preferred.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as necessary.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

Boston Residency Required.
