This is a provisional appointment.

 

The mission of the City of Boston Property Management Department (PMD) is to manage, maintain, repair, and provide security for the City's municipal buildings including City Hall and Faneuil Hall; to preserve the useful life of City facilities and reduce operating costs through effective preventative maintenance measures.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under the direction of the Alarm Specialist, the Alarm Technician will be directly responsible for maintaining intrusion alarms and surveillance cameras in over 300 City buildings, including schools, community centers, and libraries. 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and tests security and fire safety systems for the City of Boston’s Property Management Department.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and tests security cameras and wiring for access control locks.
  • Coordinates with personnel in other city departments and agencies as necessary to perform the tasks above.
  • Responds to emergencies to inspect equipment and diagnose problems with the operation of the alarm and security systems.
  • Prepares appropriate departmental records in regards to work accomplished and significant events that occur during a shift.
  • Monitors the performance of private contractors as necessary.
  • Coordinates installations with Telephone Company, utility, CATV, and other installers.
  • Performs related work and other assigned tasks as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  •  At least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the installation of security and fire safety systems. 
  •  High School Graduate or equivalent. 
  •  Knowledge of state electrical codes. 
  •  Possess a Massachusetts Class D Electrical License (Systems Technician).
  •  Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license. 
  •  Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices of electrical trade. 
  •  Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  •  CCTV experience preferred.
