Overview:

The Assistant Director of Transportation is responsible for supervising the day-to-day work of the Transportation Unit including all aspects of our driving and fleet maintenance operations, providing ongoing and proactive communication, ensuring adequate staffing, resolving complaints, etc. The position is also responsible for supporting the Director in developing and managing the Commission’s transportation strategy.

Responsibilities:

Operations

  • Collaborate with the Director of Transportation in developing, implementing, and managing the Commission’s transportation strategy as well as the day to day operations of the Age Strong Shuttle. 
  • Understand emerging transportation trends and broaden awareness and visibility on the Commission’s transportation services and priorities.  
  • Collaborate with the Director to analyze data and develop methods to improve efficiencies and effectiveness in operations, dispatch, maintenance, and customer service.
  • Direct the Unit in Director’s absence internally and externally.

 

Driver Supervision

  • Supervise a team of Drivers engaging with them, setting an example, being a team-leader, and communicating information.  Monitors employee performance, driver safety compliance, and adherence to department standards and policies.
  • Manage driver training schedules, ensuring Drivers are appropriately trained. 
  • Regularly audit drivers and conduct feedback sessions.
  • Collaborate with the Scheduling and Dispatching team in identifying and implementing solutions for routing and customer service.

 

Fleet management

  • In collaboration with the Public Works Department, manages the Age Strong fleet in all aspects of vehicle repair, service, and maintenance schedule including tracking maintenance and inspection records, monitoring and addressing cleanliness, tablet functionality, etc.
  • Manages the procurement process for the acquisition of new vehicles. 
  • Monitors and tracks department’s fuel usage
  • Maintains vehicle utilization record and tracks reported issues. Recommends vehicle replacement and arranges for disposal of older vehicles
  • Respond to all accident or incident reports following appropriate procedures and communicate issues to managers.

 

General

  • Tracks requirements for grant funded vehicles and ensures compliance.
  • Serve as back-up Driver, Dispatcher and Scheduler as needed.  
  • Compiles and maintains records.  Prepares reports, and other required documents.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in the field of administration, transportation operations, fleet management preferred.
  • Experience as a Driver or relevant position preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.  
  • Demonstrated ability in creating preventative vehicle maintenance programs and evaluation schedules
  • Knowledge of Boston’s streets and neighborhoods preferred
  • Experience and comfortability working with diverse communities, delivering services to a multiracial, multigenerational, multicultural, and multilingual population. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace 
  • Experience working with older adults preferred
  • Ability to quickly learn new technology, analyze information, problem solve, and lead a changing environment.
  • Ability to interact effectively and appropriately with subordinates and management. 
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural, multi-ethnic work environment.
  • Ability to be a team player and motivate others.
  • Ability to think critically, prepare reports, and make recommendations based on observations.
  • Strong creative and problem solving skills.
  • Compliance to documented policies and procedures.
  • Experience in typical office software systems (Microsoft Office, and Google Suite) preferred. 
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Haitian Creole, CapeVerdean Creole, Vietnamese, Cantonese, or Mandarin) preferred .
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License at all times. 
  • Excellent driving record (applicant must provide official driving record from the Registry of Motor Vehicles).
  • Physical examination required, includes a pre-employment drug test.
