Overview:

Under the direction of the Maintenance Repairperson Foreperson, the Locksmith has broad responsibilities relative to managing and maintaining the locking and keying system in City Hall and all off-premise sites under the care and custody of the Property Management Department.

 

The City of Boston Property Management Department's (PMD) mission is to manage, maintain, repair, and provide security for the City's municipal buildings, including City Hall and Faneuil Hall; to preserve the useful life of City facilities and reduce operating costs through effective preventative maintenance measures.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing and maintaining the locking and keying system in City Hall and all off-premise sites.
  • Performs and supervises all locksmith work, based on assignment, including planning, designing, and installing new keying systems.
  • Supervises the purchase, installation, and maintenance of all equipment used in existing and new construction projects with complete responsibility for soundness and methods requiring independent judgment.
  • Designs/maintains key code systems to ensure standardization and prevention of cross-keying.
  • Makes keys and maintains a separate key file for security and the duplication of any losses.
  • Documents all new and existing hardware, locks, keying systems keys, and to whom they are issued. 
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years experience in carpentry, locksmithing, and or various building trades.
  • General mechanical ability and skills in using hand tools and equipment associated with the locksmithing trade and related hardware.
  • The ability to interpret plans and blueprints and to understand hardware schedules.
  • Practical verbal and written communication skills.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship in the locksmithing trade and or full-time, paid journey-level experience in the locksmithing trade preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
