The Small Business Unit (SBU) provides innovative and high-impact programming to micro- and small businesses. The team provides these Boston-based enterprises with direct business support as well as the tools and guidance to successfully start, grow, and scale.

Reporting to the Director of Small Business, the Strategic Initiatives Manager is responsible for supporting, developing, and implementing new programs, engaging at community events, and overseeing communication and impact initiatives. This person will also conduct reporting, office needs assessments, programming, and community events.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for identifying opportunities, advising on strategy, proposal development, recommending solutions, implementing project plans, fostering external partnerships and responding to the objectives and priorities of the City of Boston. The position is responsible for project management; from planning to implementation and monitoring of special and community partnership projects, to ensure the objectives of the advancement of Small Business goals and priorities.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of new programs and initiatives including but not limited to: The Legacy Business Program, BOSNetwork program, and the restaurant program.
  • Collaborate with departments across the city, local stakeholders, and community partners to identify needs and create initiatives that center people of color and racial equity with a focus on women, immigrant, and veteran-owned businesses. 
  • Liaise with communication staff to create a community engagement strategy to ensure the team reaches all neighborhoods and successfully meets small businesses where they are.
  • Manages the office’s events calendar and department website, has a knowledge and understanding of the different community groups, stakeholders, and events.
  • Establishes networks within our communities and ensures the office is well-tapped into the community.
  • Create a streamlined user-friendly Program management system that ensures a timely execution of city support and resources.
  • Develop surveys and tools for gaining actionable and timely feedback on programs and initiatives.
  • Works across the department to oversee and report on Programmatic metrics/outcomes and initiatives of the department.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in program management, business development, community relations, or a related field
  • Experience in business development. 
  • Knowledge of Boston neighborhoods and the City of Boston.
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, marketing, finance, or a related field .
  • Strong customer service skills and community development experience.
  • Demonstrated direct program management experience conducting needs assessment, impact and evaluation, and organizational performance measurement.
  • Ability to analyze qualitative and quantitative data and report on key metrics.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and process improvement skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including MS office, Google suite, Salesforce and project management software (Asana, Airtable, etc.).
  • Demonstrable experience taking initiative and leading on key projects, with quality follow-through.
  • Demonstrable experience  exercising good judgment and focusing on details as required by the job.
  • Ability to work weekend and evenings as necessary.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese and Vietnamese).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Excellent analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to measure, analyze, and report on data.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on many assignments.
  • Ability to develop strategic and tactical plans, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to think strategically and lead complex projects or assignments.
