Overview:

The City of Boston Office of Youth Employment & Opportunity is seeking an Outreach, Recruitment and Communications Coordinator who will be responsible for overseeing and supporting the day-to-day functions of youth and community-wide outreach, communications and social media, recruitment, public relations projects, and general resource coordination for the department.

The position is designed for a lively and sociable individual with strong communication and time management  skills, who brings experience with constituent services, youth engagement, community and resource navigation, and a passion for building internal and external relationships. 

The role relies on the ability to design marketing strategies using events, web-based outreach, and other creative ideas to connect youth to employment and workforce readiness programs and opportunities, and work collaboratively with partners and stakeholders to support enrollment and recruitment goals of the department.

The Office of Youth Employment & Opportunity exists to employ, develop, and engage Boston's youth, by; exposing youth to the workforce, and bridging opportunities for personal and professional growth. YEO envisions a future where youth are educated, equipped, and empowered to transition successfully into adulthood.

Responsibilities:

This position will report directly to the Senior Manager of Engagement & Outreach for the department. Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Outreach and Communications

  • Provides oversight and ensures effective resolutions or referrals of constituent requests on a variety of issues: e.g. employment, education, work readiness, social and emotional well being, etc.
  • Oversees and supports web-page and social media development, campaign and content management.
  • Maintains regular communication with City of Boston 311 constituent service representatives to coordinate follow-up responses and services for YEO related inquiries. 
  • Designs and implements an overall recruiting strategy.
  • Drafts, codes and publishes the Department e-newsletters that go out to constituents.
  • Works with Manager of Engagement & Outreach to coordinate community-wide engagement outreach and awareness of YEO youth jobs, workforce development  and related youth services.
  • Fills community and constituent outreach and recruitment requests and needs.
  • Coordinate and schedule community jobs and  resource fairs, outreach projects. And events.
  • Works with leadership to recruit college-aged young adults for part-time internship employment opportunities to fulfill office staffing needs.
  • Manages youth and constituent listservs. 
  • Responsible for updating resource databases. Maintains a network of youth resources and experts to connect youth and families with services and opportunities in the community.
  • Develops content and graphic design of publication materials and distribution of materials. Creates flyers, brochures, videos, tutorials and materials to assist youth in connection to services.
  • Collaborates with city departments, other government agencies, and non-profit service providers to ensure the perspective and needs of youth are considered in various projects, programs, or initiatives.
  • Create editorial calendars and syndication schedules across digital marketing platforms.
  • Capture and analyze the appropriate social data/metrics, insights, and social media best practices to measure the success of every social media campaign, then use that information to refine future campaign
  • Keeps current of municipal, state and federal programs pertaining to youth to ensure appropriate referrals can be made.

 

General

  • Supports in supervising teen employees, college-aged staff and volunteers schedules and tasks.
  • Collaborate with YEO staff and other relevant team members to be forward thinking, problem-solve and address youth and department needs.
  • As needed, supports and participates in general youth engagement and employment activities, events, and special projects.
  • Performs related work as determined by the Senior Manager of Engagement & Outreach and/or the Executive Director of YEO or delegate.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

 

  • Applicants must have four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time, professional experience working with youth in a recruitment, outreach, public relations or engagement, administrative capacity. Some supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university strongly preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and Social media platforms.
  • Strong writing, editing and word processing skills are preferred.
  • Strong organizational, facilitation, listening, verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with youth, partners, community members and colleagues.
  • Computer coding and website design experience preferred.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, while maintaining attention to detail required.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self motivated, work with limited direct supervision and perform assigned duties in an accurate, timely and professional manner.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Familiarity with Boston youth service providers preferred (e.g. schools, community-based organizations, workforce and social service agencies, etc.); and familiarity with employment and career services, education, and web-based resources. 
  • Previous training and facilitation skills preferred.
  • Considerable internet research skills preferred.
  • Must be able to attend evening and weekend meetings or events as required.
  • Bilingual abilities/Bicultural experience is highly desirable.
  • Massachusetts Driver’s License Required.

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Essential functions are performed in both office and community-based settings. Position requires some travel to attend meetings, conduct outreach, and coordinate events.
