Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job)

 

The City of Boston Law Department seeks an Assistant Corporation Counsel to provide legal advice and support to the Boston Police Department. Specifically, this attorney will be assigned to the Office of the Legal Advisor and will provide advice and support to the records access officer and public records staff.

 

The ideal candidate will enjoy working with City Records and government services, be prepared to represent departments on a mix of advisory, transactional, and litigation matters, and have the ability to thoughtfully address new issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Review incoming public records requests.
  • Drafting responses to public records requests.
  • Drafting petitions to the Supervisor of Public Records
  • Communicating with public records requesters.
  • Directing the appropriate segregation, redaction, and production of records under the public records law.
  • Assisting in public records litigation matters.
  • The ideal candidate will enjoy working with City Records and government services, be prepared to represent departments on a mix of advisory, transactional, and litigation matters, and have the ability to thoughtfully address new issues.
  • Performance of other related duties as required by the Department.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate required.
  • At least 1 - 2 years of experience as a lawyer.
  • Licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Experience in writing legal briefs, completing legal research, and arguing orally in front of an adjudicator.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a dynamic team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize.

Boston Residency Required

 

Terms: Non-Union, GR 9

35 HRS a Week
