The mission of the Mayor's Office of Housing (MOH) is to make Boston a more equitable and inclusive city where all residents can thrive. MOH administers programs that create and preserve affordable housing, support homeowners and renters, provide housing and services to homeless individuals and families, and develop city-owned property. The Mayor's Office of Housing (MOH) seeks to carry out its mission through a lens of promoting diversity, equity and inclusion and addressing the effects of systemic racism in our city.


Reporting to the Chief of Housing or designee, the Deputy Director for Supportive Housing is responsible for leading the Department’s efforts toward ending homelessness for individuals and families through access to permanent housing. The Deputy Director oversees the management of staff, policies, programs, and activities of the Supportive Housing Division. They will also work with senior leaders across federal, state and city government, nonprofit and private sectors to implement programs that will achieve the Mayor’s vision of ending homelessness in our city.  


The Supportive Housing Division, as the lead entity for the community planning body responsible for ending homelessness, is in the midst of developing several strategic plans  to make homelessness rare and brief, and non-repeating across populations.  The Deputy Director is a leader in this large scale system design.


  • Oversees the Boston Continuum of Care homeless assistance projects and programs.
  • Identifies and secures resources for the creation of and support services necessary for affordable housing for homeless households.
  • Directs oversight and management of the annual Continuum of Care applications to HUD and other homeless and supportive housing programs.
  • Oversees and manages the Division’s budget, contracting, reporting and project performance.
  • Oversees and manages the procurement process for Federal and State Grants related to homelessness and special populations.
  • Facilitates communication, resolves problems, and collaborates on system transformation efforts with other City departments involved in ending homelessness.
  • Facilitates communication and resolves issues and problems with other agencies, service providers, developers, lenders, and neighborhood representatives as it relates to ending homelessness, the housing first approach, and supportive housing development.
  • Works closely with the Neighborhood Housing Development Division to expand housing opportunities for homeless households in the development of mainstream affordable housing projects.
  • Convenes with the Continuum of Care Leadership Council and various other leadership teams, workgroups and committees.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of a plan to end homelessness in the City of Boston, currently known as the Action Plan to End Veteran and Chronic Homelessness in Boston.
  • Develops and maintains policies and procedures and assist with their implementation.
  • Completes special projects identified by the Chief of Housing or her designee.
  • Performs other related duties as required by the position.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least five (5) years in a senior management position in housing advocacy, supportive housing, case management services, or related field including project management experience in guiding complex organizational change and policy development of which three (3) years should be in a supervisory capacity.
  • Master's degree in public policy, social work, business or public administration or related fields strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of housing development, affordable housing issues, particularly local, state and federal resources used to create permanent supportive housing.
  • Familiarity with housing programs and services offered by the City of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Familiarity with and dedication to housing first philosophy and approach.
  • Experience with public speaking including presentations at public forums or on panels.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution, which are sensitive to the needs of diverse populations.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and ability to work with the public.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule of nights and weekends as needed in support of position’s responsibilities.
