Overview:

This is a provisional appointment.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Responsible for the accuracy and maintenance of all signs under the jurisdiction of the Transportation department in assigned areas. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Required to investigate Constituent, Mayor's Office, City Councilor's Office or any other complaints assigned by the Director of Operation, the Chief traffic Investigator or Commissioner's Office regarding signage and pavement marking issues. 
  • Prepares detailed field sheets ands electronic work orders for the replacement of damaged, faded or missing public safety, regulatory or street name signs. 
  • Recommends and plans traffic detours; investigates requests for loading zones, valet zones, handicap parking installations, parking prohibitions and one-way streets. 
  • Investigates complaints concerning severe congestion of streets and submits recommendations concerning such matters. 
  • Inspects work performed by contractors; inspects completed work and verifies work completed by Sign Shop. 
  • Consults with Chief Traffic Investigator in planning construction or repair detours; provides for setting up proper detour signs. 
  • Makes traffic surveys and counts and summarize results. 
  • Inspects pavement marking conditions and installations.
  • Performs related work as required.

  Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner or designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

Two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in drafting or surveying work in areas related to transportation management and/or the fabrication and installation of public safety, regulatory or street name signs. Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job. Computer software experience preferred. Familiarity with the processes and procedures of BTD Sign Shop preferred. Must possess and demonstrate an above average knowledge of City of Boston geography, roadways and neighborhoods.

 

Certificate Requirements:

 

Must have and maintain and provide a copy of current and valid Class D, Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License.  Must provide Current Registry of Motor Vehicles Driving Record.

 

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED.
