Overview:

This is a temporary, BPDA grant funded position for approximately three (3) years.

 

Brief Job Description:


This position focuses on the implementation of innovative multimodal transportation improvements stemming from a variety of BPDA plans and supporting plans by the Boston Transportation Department. The position primarily involves developing detailed designs and implementing the recommendations. The work is highly collaborative, including: 1) engaging with the local communities in the vicinity of the projects to communicate, understand, and obtain feedback on the designs; and, 2) working with the BTD Engineering team to review and approve all designs. The position will also involve developing simple designs in house, or where appropriate, contracting with consultants to develop 100% designs. This position will report to the Chief of Streets or designee.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee development of detailed engineering plans and designs to implement physical  improvements recommended by BPDA plans and supporting plans by BTD, including but not limited  to separated bike lanes, traffic calming measures, enhanced crosswalks, curbside use plans, curb extensions/bulouts, pedestrian signs and signals, chicanes, curb extensions, lane restripings, etc.
  • Work with BTD and PWD engineers and staff to review all design plans. 
  • Plan, organize, lead and facilitate community meetings to present and discuss proposed plans and  designs. 
  • Make effective public presentations using PowerPoint and other graphic software.
  • Monitor installation of improvements. 
  • Procure and manage consultants and contractors to develop and implement designs.
  • Manage consultant teams including scope, schedule, task prioritization, budget parameters, and city-agency  coordination. 
  • Prepares regular reports for senior leadership at BTD and the BPDA.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of transportation planning experience, of which at least two years must have been in a  project management capacity.
  • Project management experience should include contracting;  managing scope, schedule, and budget; and managing risks and changes.
  • A bachelor’s degree in city planning or related field preferred and may be substituted for two (2)  years of the required experience. The required project management experience may not be substituted.
  • Demonstrated ability to take projects from concept to implementation strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of NACTO’s Transit, Street, and Urban Bikeway Design guides, MassDOT’s Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide, Boston Complete Streets Guidelines, and familiarity  with relevant MUTCD, AASHTO and FHWA guidelines.
  • Demonstrated record working in multi-disciplinary outcome-oriented teams.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of public agencies, private consultants and community  groups.
  • Proven research, writing, oral, organizational and graphic presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with GIS mapping, graphic design, data analysis and maintenance and  website development. 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications, and Google Suite.
