Overview:

THIS POSITION IS OPEN ONLY TO EMPLOYEES OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THE MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL LAWS CHAPTER 31.  ONLY QUALIFIED APPLICANTS FROM THIS DEPARTMENT MAY BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS VACANCY.

 

This is a provisional appointment.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under direction, the General Park Maintenance Foreperson responsibility for the general supervision of maintenance in all city cemeteries, including historical cemeteries. 

Responsibilities:

  • Directs foremen in the supervision of maintenance and cleaning of cemeteries grounds.
  • Reviews the scheduling and progress of work by the forepersons.
  • Supervises contractors in the excavating and installation of single grave sectional liners for looming, seeding and repair work.
  • Assigns remains to ranges and sections; assigns graves for foreperson to make grave openings.
  • Prepares necessary documents for removal of remains from cemeteries.
  • Sells lots and graves in all city cemeteries; receives orders for funerals.
  • Approves monuments designs checking for compliance with regards to legal restrictions on size.
  • Inspects work and sees that it is performed correctly.
  • Requisitions and supervises the distribution of materials and supplies.
  • Checks time records and prepares required reports.
  • Confers with Superintendent on major problems and recommends solutions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have A) At least three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid experience in the maintenance and care of cemeteries of which * B) one (1) year must have been in a supervisory capacity. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the requirements of city owned cemeteries; knowledge of locating and the assignment of grave locations.
  • Experience in grounds maintenanece; working knowledge of burial procedures and opening of grave sites.
  • Experience dealing with the general public under extreme circumstances connected with funerals and burials.
  • Experience with transferring of deeds and bonds.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

 

**No substitutions will be allowed for the "B" experience.**

 

Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License. CDL Class B License preferred.

 

Must be able to obtain a valid Massaachusetts Hoisting License within the first six (6) months of promotion.

 

Pre-Employment Physical, Drug Test and CORI required of selected applicant.

 

Boston Residency Required.
