Overview:

Millions of people interact with the City of Boston digitally each year to do everything from finding information on City services to paying a parking ticket. On the Digital Services team, we believe these experiences should be easy to navigate, dignified and even delightful. The Digital Services team within DoIT is focused on partnering with City departments to improve service delivery across the City. We’re a cross-functional team with a mission to improve the user experience of existing digital services, better engage and communicate with our residents, and build new systems to improve how the City delivers services online. 

The Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) provides and maintains mission-critical technologies for the City’s more than 18,000 employees and the hundreds of thousands of constituents they serve. 

Brief Job Description:

As a UI/UX designer, you’ll be responsible for leading UX and UI design efforts, creating prototypes and wireframes, refining and updating our design system and component library, facilitating user research sessions, and developing product requirements. For this particular role, we’re looking for a research-focused designer with strong interaction design fundamentals. 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Conducts concept and usability testing; gathers and analyzes feedback.
  • Leads rapid iterative prototyping efforts with varying fidelity/presentation tools (e.g., sketches, storyboards, wireframes, clickable prototypes, compositions, and assets)
  • Engages with internal and external stakeholders to understand user needs.
  • Translates user requirements into beautiful concepts and highly-usable responsive experiences.
  • Factors into work the full context of the user experience including income, accessibility and language challenges, user needs, and user persona characteristics.
  • Communicates and translates research insights into actionable recommendations that inform design and implementation.
  • Visualizes design ideas using storyboards, process flows, sitemaps, and wireframes.
  • Designs interactive graphic user interface elements (e.g. menus, tabs, widgets, page navigation buttons, and search fields) as well as page templates and content types.
  • Helps to define high level content strategy and information architecture approach.
  • Takes a lead role in positioning and promoting the City of Boston design standards throughout the City, and help to guide it’s evolution based on best practices.
  • Participates in design reviews and peer reviews.
  • Provides SME input into planning and estimates and for work in upcoming sprints.
  • Contributes time and skill in promoting and storytelling the work of the Digital Services team. You see yourself as an ambassador for the work.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

 

  • Applicant must have at least 3-4 years experience in relevant roles.
  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in user-centered design, anthropology, public administration, public policy, economics, information technology, data science, finance, sociology, political science, urban studies or a closely related field.
  • Strong portfolio featuring real-world examples of relevant work. 
  • A detailed understanding of user-centered design, with excellent hands-on design skills.
  • Experience with design systems in large scale organizations.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize requests, communicate with stakeholders, and meet expected milestones.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, agile environment, especially partnering effectively with business and development stakeholders
  • Strong interest in public service and the desire to improve life for the residents of Boston
  • Experience with information architecture, taxonomies and creating navigation systems for broad and diverse information websites.
  • Experience with Figma, AdobeXD, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.
  • Familiarity with current web development technologies and standards, including HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript
  • Familiarity with web development, responsive design, and accessibility
  • Strong understanding of web analytics
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to understand and synthesize complex systems.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.



BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED.

You must live within Boston city limits at the start of your employment.
