This is a provisional appointment.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

The Boston Retirement Board is seeking a legal assistant to work directly with the General Counsel on a wide range of Massachusetts public retirement issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and implements domestic relations orders (DROs);
  • Examines disability, restoration and death claims for compliance with MGL Ch.32, sections 6,7,8 & 9;
  • Checks accuracy of disability calculations and offsets in V3 before final processing on benefits payroll;
  • Researches and prepares documentation for board counsel for use in proceedings at court or at other regulatory bodies such as PERAC, DALA or CRAB;
  • Represents the board, as assigned by the Executive Officer or General Counsel, at regulatory or administrative hearings;
  • Responds to public records requests as assigned;
  • Reviews partnership agreements and other investment agreements for regulatory compliance and routes to General Board Consul for review;
  • Conducts basic legal research and draft legal memoranda as needed;
  • Assists in other legal matters as assigned by the Executive Officer and General Counsel;
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Participates in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must possess at least (3) three years of full time, or equivalent part time, professional experience preferably in a legal department of either a private corporation or in the public sector. A bachelors degree may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.  
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts public employee retirement law and regulations (MGL Ch. 32 & 840 CMR) is required. 
  • The aptitude to communicate clearly verbally and in writing with colleagues and the public, as well as, the awareness and practice of proper customer relation skills are required. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office and experience with public employee pension software is advantageous. 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

 

Boston Residency Required.
