Overview:

INDIVIDUALS WISHING TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION MUST COMPLETE THE CIVIL SERVICE LABOR SERVICE REGISTRATION PROCESS FOR THE POSITION AT IN ADDITION TO COMPLETING THE CITY OF BOSTON CAREER CENTER APPLICATION.

 

The mission of the City of Boston Property Management Department (PMD) is to manage, maintain, repair, and provide security for the City's municipal buildings including City Hall and Faneuil Hall; to preserve the useful life of City facilities and reduce operating costs through effective preventative maintenance measures.

 

Under the direction of the Director of the Alteration and Repair program, the Maintenance Mechanic (Plumber) will perform a wide variety of plumbing and maintenance work to support the efficient and effective functioning of Property Management’s buildings.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and repair plumbing systems and fixtures in City Hall and other buildings.
  • Test pipe systems, fix leaks, and perform preventive maintenance as required.
  • Maintain, clean, repair, and diagnose problems with interior and exterior drains, lines, and fixtures.
  • Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, fixtures, and other parts, such as sinks and toilets.
  • Use hand and power tools in the performance of plumbing duties.
  • Prepare appropriate departmental records in regard to work accomplished, tool inventories, and significant events that occur during a shift.
  • Perform repairs to surrounding finish areas following any required demolition.
  • Coordinate with personnel in other City Departments as necessary to perform the tasks above.
  • Monitor the performance of private contractors as necessary.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have two (2) years of paid experience as a plumber.
  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials commonly used in the plumbing and maintenance trades.
  • Physical ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds and maneuver a minimum 6-foot ladder.
  • Valid Massachusetts journeyman’s plumbing license preferred. 
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
  • Must be able to read, write and understand the English language.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
