Brief Job Description:

In response to the findings from the 2022 Urban Forest Plan, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department (BPRD) has established a new Forestry Division with the goal of better maintaining and increasing tree canopy in the City of Boston. Under the supervision of the Director of Urban Forestry and the Tree Warden, the Logistics Manager (GIS) will perform GIS-based asset and maintenance tracking, as well as work planning and coordination for Arborists and work crews. This role requires training and experience with GIS, preparing preventative and deferred maintenance schedules, coordinating emergency response efforts during and after storm events and communicating with contractors. Assembly of written, oral and graphic communications will also be required.

The Logistics Manager (GIS) collects data from staff in the field, integrates data into the relevant databases, synthesizes the data, creates GIS-based maps, and drafts reports and plans for the BPRD Forestry Division, with the goal of supporting and growing Boston’s tree canopy. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Monitoring, coordinating and scheduling Forestry Division maintenance efforts by internal staff and outside contractors or consultants;
• Supporting the Director of Urban Forestry and Tree Warden in developing systems for asset management, emergency management, facility analysis, and service provision
• Developing and maintaining the Forestry Division’s GIS-based Asset Management database and associated GIS data, consistent with goals and objectives of the Division, incorporating data updates from Arborist inspections and other sources.
• Coordinating GIS data to support planning and maintenance projects, developing standards and implementing procedures for GIS creation and maintenance of maps and complex databases;
• Researching data sources, digitizing data and collecting geospatial and attribute data in coordination with the City's IT department (DoIT).
• Producing graphic representations of geospatial data; maps and charts; and written reports
• Developing, maintaining and updating a variety of map resources;
• Contributing to citywide planning efforts related to urban tree cover, urban heat island, etc., including GIS analysis;
• Informing planning, maintenance and GIS-related Division/Department policy initiatives;
• Participating in public outreach meetings and events, as required;
• Working constructively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment;
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships;
• Acting as technical advisor to Division staff on questions or problems related to GIS and mapping; and
• Performing all other related work, as required.

• At least three (3) years of full time or equivalent part-time professional experience in operations or logistics
• A bachelor's degree in Forestry/Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning or related field;
• Demonstrated experience using geographic information system (GIS) software, a GIS-based asset management database, and/or a geodatabase to edit, maintain and share data
• Strong computer skills and proficiency in ArcGIS/ArcGIS Online (AGOL) and Microsoft Office;
• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• Strong project management skills;
• Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail, as required by the job; and
• Demonstrated skills in thinking creatively and recommending solutions to solve complex problems.
• Must have and Maintain a valid Massachusetts Drivers License.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certified Geographic Information System(GISP) preferred
• Previous experience working with federal, state and/or local governments;
• Prior experience in parks and open space planning, design and maintenance;
• Strong skills in ArcGIS/AGOL, including knowledge of publishing map services from a geodatabase to AGOL;
• Familiarity with Esri's Web App Builder application; and
• Proficiency in graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite)
