This is a Labor Service position.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

  

Works under the immediate supervision of the City of Boston Animal Shelter Manager and the Director of Animal Care and Control.  Ensures all animals are cared for and treated in a humane manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures all animals are provided with the appropriate amount of food and water.
  • Follows established disease control and daily cleaning protocols.
  • Cleans animal cages, quarters, equipment and utensils.
  • Assists with animal intake and evaluations.
  • Creates and maintains necessary animal records.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Performs related work as required.

  

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to animal, dander, debris, odors, approved cleaning solutions, airborne particles, dust and zoonotic diseases.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions when working outside with animals.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicant must have at least one (1) year experience with the handling of animals.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, Google calendar, docs and email and Chameleon preferred.
  • Ability to safely handle, restrain, walk and exercise animals of all sizes.
  • Ability to safely work with animals that may be injured, unruly, vicious, or otherwise dangerous.
  • Tetanus and rabies (pre-exposure) inoculations are required or must be waived.
  • Ability to work well and communicate effectively with the public, employees and volunteers.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires frequent and/or prolonged walking, bending, lifting and stooping.
