Overview:

This is a provisional appointment.

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

Under general supervision, with latitude provided for independent problem solving, performs professional traffic engineering work of moderate difficulty and importance relating to traffic engineering in the Neighborhood Traffic Safety Unit.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities to include, but not limited to:

  • Assists with the preparation of traffic engineering reports used to address vehicular and pedestrian safety issues in neighborhoods.
  • Provides recommendations on layout, design and placement of traffic control devices.
  • Analyzes crash data and prepares collision diagrams at high crash locations.
  • Collects data and manages data collection programs.
  • Prepares traffic engineering plans using AutoCAD.
  • Reviews plans and specifications for accuracy and completeness on contractual work involving signs, pavement markings, parking meters, etc.
  • Reviews and responds to constituent requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Attends community meetings as representative of the Department and works with neighborhood groups to improve parking, traffic flow, and transportation safety throughout the City.
  • Performs related work as required.

Required to work any and all emergencies as directed by the Commissioner or designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have at least two (2) year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience in civil, traffic or transportation engineering.
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering is preferred and may be substituted for the required experience.
  • FE/EIT certificate, SYNCHRO, and AutoCAD experience is preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts driver’s license.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED.

Union/Salary Plan/Grade: AFSCME/RA-16A

Hours per week: 35

 

Work Hours:  Monday – Friday, 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
