Overview:

Brief Job Description:

 

The Technical Assistant reports to and assists the Technical Director with productions on the main stage. The assistant works with the Technical Director to execute lighting looks for each event as the light board operator. Gives technical support set up to production presented in the small spaces of the theater. Steps in as the supervisor in the absence of the Technical Director, working to make sure there is appropriate coverage for events. This position works as the liaison between the Technical Director and event producers and must be able to step in and take the lead when directed by the General Manager to assure smooth working relationships.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Master Electrician with the installation, maintenance, and organization of all lighting equipment for the production;
  • Attend all production meetings for events
  • Assist with technical staff schedules, covers vacation and scheduled time off of the Technical Director
  • Participates in all lighting hang, focus, notes, and strike calls;
  • Works with the Lighting Designer and Master Electrician to keep lighting paperwork current;
  • Responsible for channel check prior to each performance and assuring proper operation of all equipment prior to curtain;
  • Serves as board operator for focus call: tracks which lights are focused, brings up and takes out lights as requested by the Designer;
  • Serves as programmer during cueing sessions and technical rehearsals, taking instruction from the Lighting Designer;
  • Serves as board operator for performances, taking instruction from the Stage Manager
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace, make safety equipment available during work calls

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Familiar with ETC Ion (Eos) software, Lightwright and Vectorworks;
  • Familiar with common stage directions and parlance;
  • Receive cues from the stage manager via intercom, and communicate any issues that may arise;
  • Able to uphold a tone of collaboration, respect, optimism, and professionalism in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.

College degree preferred

  • 2-3 years of experience in theater lighting
  • Knowledge of safe practices regarding theatrical electricity and technologies.
  • Skilled with all lighting-related equipment, cursory skill with small hand and power tools.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work from heights (ie grids, catwalks, ladders, and genie lifts).
  • Ability to lift 50+

Boston Residency Required.

 

Terms:

Union/Salary Plan/Grade: Nonunion/Exempt Salary range of $35k- $42K 

Hours Per Week: 35
