Brief Job Description:


The primary function of this position is to provide high-quality medical care to animals in the care and custody of the City of Boston and any animals accessing services available through the City of Boston community medicine efforts. The Veterinarian assists in developing, advancing, and implementing shelter medicine protocols and delivers and ensures humane medical treatment of all animals in the care and custody of the City of Boston under the direction of the Director of the City of Boston’s Animal Care and Control Division.


  • Provides medical services to all shelter animals, including physical examinations, diagnostics, medical rounds, and treatments.
  • Follows progress of all patients placed on treatment, keeping records of all treatments and final outcomes.
  • Prescribes and administers medication and treatments and other routine vet care.
  • Performs spay/neuter surgeries and other necessary surgical procedures.
  • Performs humane euthanasia; including the preparation of specimens for rabies testing.
  • Attends community based Rabies clinics and other programs available through the City of Boston.
  • Provides community medicine services available through the City of Boston.
  • Identifies opportunities to provide the most current and best practices for all aspects of the City of Boston’s veterinary services.
  • Identifies and applies for grant opportunities to increase the community medicine capability of the shelter.
  • Oversees the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA requirements.
  • Provides pre- adoptive and home care instructions for adopted animals from the shelter.
  • Maintains effective communication with staff through daily contact, in scheduled meetings, informally or in writing, as needed to coordinate the medical functions of the shelter.
  • Provides on-call services for shelter animal emergencies.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with relief veterinarians for as needed coverage.
  • Oversees that appropriate shelter personnel have been properly trained to administer vaccines, perform tests and euthanasia.
  • Supervises the Veterinary Technician and assists with day to day duties.
  • Fundraising responsibilities, such as grant writing, grant management, and reporting
  • Veterinary internship program supervision
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree
  • Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure in Massachusetts.
  • Ability to establish a DEA Site License at the City of Boston Animal Care Facility.
  • At least two (2) years of shelter medicine experience.
  • Knowledge of animal health laws and regulations.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to pass a CORI background check.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs.
  • Must be able to work any assigned shift including weekends, evenings and nights (if necessary).
  • Must be flexible and able to work beyond regularly scheduled shift including emergencies and on-call.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
