The Boston Parks and Recreation Department (BPRD) is responsible for the stewardship of the open space portfolio of more than 330 properties across the City of Boston. BPRD is the core agency that oversees the tracking, protection, maintenance and expansion of the City’s tree canopy, both in Parks and other City-owned open space, and in the public right of way.


In an effort to enhance Boston’s urban forest we are expanding the Urban Forestry Division within BPRD which will build and direct the division and work to ensure urban forestry principles and practices are incorporated into many public initiatives and plans, and become integrated into citywide operations.


Brief Job Description:


Reporting to the Director of Urban Forestry or a designee, the Executive Assistant for Urban Forestry will support the Urban Forestry Division in a variety of administrative tasks related to the operation of the division. 



  • Assists the Director in a variety of administrative functions related to the operations of the Urban Forestry Division.
  • Independently and in collaboration with other Parks Department divisions; assists with resolving constituent issues.
  • Assists in Receiving, triaging, and prioritizing work orders and projects for assignment to division staff and contractors via various avenues, including phone calls, email, and via Boston’s 3-1-1 constituent service applications.
  • Assists in public outreach and may attend Tree Hearings to provide support to Tree Warden or Designee
  • Provides information regarding the Urban Division to other City of Boston departments as requested by generating reports and accessing internal records
  • Performs supporting tasks related to the implementation and updating of Assets in Boston's Urban Forest Plan.
  • Assists in the preparation of the division’s annual budget request.
  • Assists in the procurement of necessary supplies, equipment, and contracted services for the division.
  • Assists in the planning and preparation for major weather events and other emergencies
  • Prepares and submits weekly time and attendance sheets for the Tree division to the Personnel Unit for processing.
  • Serve as the liaison between the Personnel Unit an Tree Division's employees.
  • Responsible for the upkeep and processing of all records, as well as the establishment of a centralized filing system.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • (3-5) Three to five years of experience in a public administration or administrative support capacity is required.
  • An Associate's Degree is preferred and may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.  An undergraduate degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • A thorough understanding of all aspects of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and video conferencing software (ie, Zoom) is required. Experience with Lagan/City Worker or similar work order software is preferred.
  • Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to coordinate the work efforts of a diverse staff and to communicate well with the public, via phone, in-person and electronically.
  • Must be a highly motivated self-starter who can balance multiple projects and deadlines, and who enjoys working with members of the public.
  • Willingness to obtain a Massachusetts Certified Public Procurement Official designation.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Haitain Creole, or Cape Verdean Creole is preferred.
  • Required to travel to various Parks department locations.
  • Must have and maintain a current and valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
