Brief Job Description: 

The City of Boston seeks to fill two part-time positions for American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters. The ASL Interpreter is a professional staff position that works with the Commission and other city departments to provide Sign Language Interpretation for City of Boston programs, services, and activities to constituents who are Deaf or Hard of hearing, as well as producing video interpretation of other communications produced by the City of Boston.

• The Interpreters’ primary role will be to provide interpreting between English and American Sign Language, and vice versa, to facilitate communication between hearing and Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals.
• Interpreting will be expected at press conferences, Disabilities Commission Advisory Board meetings, and at other public hearings and events.
• The ASL Interpreters will be expected to share interpretation duties for long meetings and events. The ASL Interpreter may be expected to work with external interpreters, including ASL interpreters and Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDIs) for large scale events.
• Some events might occur outside of regular business hours and on the weekends. Some events will be televised.
• The ASL Interpreters will serve as an on-demand interpreter for one-on-one interactions between constituents and City services at City Hall, as available during their scheduled shifts. The Interpreter will not be expected to meet all such requests, but rather be the first point of contact for City Hall staff.
• The ASL Interpreters will record videos interpreting the text of highly-trafficked Boston.gov webpages, emergency broadcast messages, and other regularly scheduled content published by the City of Boston.
• Under the guidance of the Mayor’s Commission for Persons with Disabilities, and in coordination with the Mayor’s Office of Language and Communications Access, provide feedback to shape internal ASL interpreter policies.
• The ASL Interpreters must understand and uphold confidentiality, informed consent, and non-discrimination in accordance with city policies and the national interpreter standards of practice and code of ethics.

Additional Responsibilities

• Offer training and mentoring sessions for area ASL interpreters regarding press conferences and other government-specific interpreting skills.
• Peforms related work as required.

• Minimum of three (3) years on-site interpreting experience. At least two-years of experience interpreting in a government setting is preferred.
• Must be fluent in American Sign Language, and both spoken and written English.
• Demonstrated expertise in American Sign Language to English interpretation.
• Member of RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf), and adherence to the Code of Professional Ethics as outlined by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
• Must have exceptional interpersonal skills.
• Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
