Overview:

Brief Job Description:


The Department of Innovation and Technology(DoIT) provides technical support services for numerous city of Boston agencies. DoIT is looking for an experienced database administrator to grow and improve SQL Server services our department provides to our customers.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Capacity planning - Works with our infrastructure team to analyze SQL Server utilization and plan for future capacity requirements.
  • Software installation and maintenance - Initial installation and configuration of SQL Servers, application of patches and upgrades as required.
  • Manage data migrations and replication.
  • Database Backup and Recovery - creates backup and recovery plans and procedures based on industry best practices.
  • Utilizes public and private cloud resources for provisioning servers, database setup, patching and backups.
  • Analyzes and recommends serverless database services like RDS, Azure SQL, Aurora etc. best suited for the project requirements.
  • Database tuning and performance monitoring - As part of on-going maintenance, proactively tune and optimize databases to operate at maximum efficiency. This could be configuration changes, indexing the DB or helping developers and operations teams in tuning the queries to improve performance.
  • Troubleshooting - support production operations in resolving database issues.
  • Security monitoring - Identify and analyze potential weaknesses and recommend/implement best practices to minimize risks. Analyze logs for possible damage in case of breach.
  • Automate routine processes using T-SQL, PowerShell and/or other scripting languages.
  • Provides support for critical production systems during and after business hours as needed.
  • Provide ssupport in the administration, backup, integrity and security of SQL databases.
  • Manages SQL Server databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems.
  • Maintains database servers and processes in coordination with other DBAs as needed.
  • Maintains quality service by helping to establish and enforce organization standards
  • Attends educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, benchmarking state-of-the-art practices, participating in professional societies.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Minimum five plus (5+) years of experience working with Microsoft SQL database systems required.
  • Bachelor of Science with a concentration in computer science, information systems, information security, math, engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial), or other business/technology disciplines or equivalent work experience preferred
  • Three plus (3+) years of relevant business and working experience are required to ensure tasks are completed without supervision.
  • Two plus (2+) years of strong experience in a Microsoft Windows environment and the ability to document systems engineering efforts.
  • Microsoft SQL DBA experience with HA\DR features like SQL Failover clustering, AlwaysOn, and log shipping.
  • Experience designing Microsoft SQL database architecture, logical and physical, automation, documentation, installs, shell scripting, T-SQL programming, backup & recovery, monitoring, and database and query tuning.
  • Knowledge of database-related technologies: SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Profiler, SQL Server Agent, SSIS, and SSRS.
  • Knowledge of other database systems (Oracle, MYSQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.) is a plus.
  • Azure & AWS experience.
  • Strong technical aptitude with a passion to learn about enterprise IT and IS best practices.
  • Experience working with Linux environment.
  • Experience identifying database requirements, and designing proposed systems.
  • Experience designing solutions by defining database physical structure and functional capabilities, database security, data back-up, and recovery specifications.
  • Experience maintaining database performance by calculating optimum values for server configurations, implementing new releases, completing maintenance requirements, and evaluating computer operating systems and hardware products.
  • End-user support experience including training, and problem-solving.
  • Current professional and technical certifications are a plus.
  • Ability to multitask, nimbleness, and highly functional within a team environment.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details as required by the job.

 

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED.
