As the newly named Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Cabinet reorganizes internally to execute its economic development vision and agenda, it will hire a Director of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment to collaborate with the Chief of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion (CEOI) and be responsible for ensuring that Boston remains an attractive and accessible place for the thriving creative economy, implementing the Cabinet’s vision of transforming neighborhoods into destinations to help add to the local cultural vibrancy and support Boston’s small businesses, andenhancing the city’s image on the international stage.


The Mayor's Office of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment supports local industry by producing events, supporting film / TV production, and marketing the City to conventions and visitors. Its enhanced focus will include working with partners like the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, local chambers of commerce, Boston Main Streets organizations, the Global Affairs team, community groups, and others to proactively draw diverse conventions, meetings, and events to the city in order to amplify the rich heritage defined by each neighborhood.


The person in this role will work with the team to plan, develop, and implement special community-driven events and celebrations. Additionally, they will oversee the process of Film and TV production in the City, ensuring a broader understanding of the City’s diversity is highlighted and that all neighborhoods are cast in a positive light. They will engage external partners and City departments, acting as the point of contact for the development of Special Events, Celebrations, and Filming in the City and serve as a connector of the tourism industry to all of Boston’s neighborhoods. The ideal person will be a strong project manager as well as a self-starter who is able to work independently and creatively with confidence and a strong passion for economic equity. They must be high-energy, action-oriented, results-driven, a problem solver, humble and collaborative, and unapologetically committed to social justice and economic opportunity for all communities across the City of Boston.

Responsibilities:

A successful Director of Tourism, Sports and Entertainment will execute the following roles and responsibilities as well as:

  • Attend high-level meetings with the CEOI as needed and represent the Cabinet at relevant events.
  • Develop and maintain a database that tracks, accounts for, and complex all data about the events, hotel occupancy, foot traffic, and other tourism-related information across the City of Boston.
  • Engage with external partners and City departments, acting as the point of contact for the development of events, partnerships, and programs.
  • Establish relationships with key stakeholders in the community like local non-profit organizations, the private sector , and relevant officials at all levels of government.
  • Evaluate and measure the effectiveness and impact of the department's programs and services.
  • Manage special projects and ad hoc events as needed.
  • Manage the annual budget process including any funds related to special events.
  • Oversee the Department's marketing efforts.
  • Oversee the Department's Technical /Production crew.
  • Plans, directs, and manages the Office of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment; partners with local tourism organizations and hospitality industry to promote Boston as a premier destination for tourists and large events.
  • Work with the Department of Small Business and the Main Streets program, as well as the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture, to coordinate tourism and events in neighborhoods.

Film:

  • Coordinate and facilitate all Film Committee meetings.
  • Monitor and respond to all film applications and submissions.
  • Review proposed film productions with other agencies and departments needed to provide services and permits.
  • Review property permitting procedures with applicants

Special Events:

  • Chair the Public Events Committee, which processes, responds to, and schedules approximately 800 public event applications each year.
  • Collaborate with the senior management team to further the mission of the department.
  • Work with the Director of Special events to coordinate all department event planning, development and production including:
    • Cultivating partnerships with all event stakeholders including external associates and City departments.
    • Manages any ad hoc events as needed.
    • Thoughtful, specific attention to the design and overall message of events.
    • Working with the neighborhood and business groups to produce the City’s annual public celebrations, including but not limited to, Patriots Day, Junetheenth, 4th of July ceremonies, Dorchester Day parade, St. Patrick’s Day parade, Puerto Rican Day Parade, Haitian day Parade, Caribbean Carnival, etc.
  • Set the department's event calendar, manae internal event meetings and supervise event budgets.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least five (5) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in coordinating and programming public and private events.
  • At least five (5) years managing a team in a related field.
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred and may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Strong passion for economic equity, the Cabinet’s mission, and eliminating the racial wealth gap.
  • Creative and strategic thinking.
  • Familiarity with Boston's neighborhoods, Boston’s history and geography, and tourism and hospitality organizations, both local and national.
  • Knowledge and ease of working on small and entrepreneurial teams.
  • Knowledge or theory , principles , practices and techniques of public administration, including budget and financial planning, financial management, human resources, purchasing, risk management, operations management, and other general operations support services federal, state and local laws, regulations and court decisions applicable to event management.
  • Possess a familiarity with public celebrations and tourism in all of Boston’s neighborhoods.
  • Understanding of how to manage events logistically within an allocated budget.
  • Understanding of local state and federal government operations and processes.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Zoom, Slack, Asana, Apple IOS, and other workplace/project management technologies.
  • Excellent time and project management, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a fast-paced environment.
  • A self-organized and self-motivated problem-solver.
  • Strong Interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including staff, colleagues, departments, partners, and business and civic leaders.
  • Strong prioritization skills, performing multiple tasks seamlessly and with impeccable attention to details.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work environment and schedule.
  • Ability to center on planning and manage events of varying sizes and purposes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Mayor, City Commissioners, department directors, managers, elected and appointed officials of other governmental agencies, City employees, and business and community leaders, the media, and City residents encountered in the course of work.
  • Ability to learn new software and databases.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ability to deliver efficient and courteous constituent services.
  • Ability to represent the City effectively in negotiations and other dealings on a variety of difficult, complex, sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Availability to work independently and with professional discretion.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese and Vietnamese).
  • Ability to travel within Boston as needed (within the changing guidelines of COVID-19).
  • Ability to work with a broad range of people while managing differing priorities and needs.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

TERMS:

Union/Salary Plan/Grade: Nonunion/Salary This position is non graded and the salary is $120,000.00 per year.
