Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, examines building specifications and plans to insure compliance with the fire codes, building codes and other related laws, ordinances or regulations in the Fire Department; performs professional and detailed examination and acceptance testing of architects' and engineers' plans and computations for proposed new buildings and other structures, and for alterations to existing buildings and structures in order to determine whether the proposed methods of construction and the materials to be used are in accordance with the requirements of the fire codes and building codes and related laws and regulations.

 

Responsibilities:

Approves or disapproves such plans on own responsibility. In the event of disapproval, suggests necessary changes in order to achieve compliance. Compares applications for fire permits and building permits with the plans to insure consistency. Prepares letters of refusal citing sections of the code which have been violated by plans or specifications submitted. Confers with the officials of the Fire Department concerning any matters involving restrictions on building methods and materials. Reviews performance based on alternative design and checks for equivalency codes. Performs related work as required. 

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of experience in the supervision and inspection of new building construction/repair and renovation which involved application of the Boston Fire Prevention Code, Approved Reference Standards, Chapter 802 of the State Building Code and of the Sanitary Code relative to fire prevention.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET accredited school or a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited school is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • A Master of Science or Master of Engineering degree in Fire Protection Engineering is preferred and may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

MUST HAVE AND MAINTAIN A VALID MASSACHUSETTS DRIVERS LICENSE
