This is a provisional appointment.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Reporting to the Director of Research or other assigned supervisor conducts statistical studies and other research for the Valuation Division, Research and Standards Unit. 

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares spreadsheets, reports, graphs, databases and GIS maps relating to mass appraisal and property valuation in the City of Boston.
  • Acquires and develops knowledge of real estate property types, characteristics, mass appraisal, valuation methods, and data-gathering methods.
  • Investigates and interprets data regarding individual property sales; uses data to determine appropriate sale codes.
  • Searches for new sources of market data; stays up-to-date on relevant real estate articles, publications and industry research.
  • Acquires and develops knowledge of Boston neighborhoods, proposes new classifications, categories, regions to fit departmental needs.
  • Assists in multiple regression analysis and data mining exercises.
  • Uses GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to conduct research and provide information that supports property valuation.
  • Conducts related studies, special projects and prepares reports.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least three (3) years’ experience in statistical research or a related field.
  • Appropriate educational substitutions may be accepted for two years of this experience; a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Geography, Business or a related field is preferred.
  • Skill in GIS, spreadsheets, database and presentation graphics software preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, SPSS, CAMA and the Internet preferred.
  • Knowledge of statistics, property valuation and Boston's real estate market conditions preferred.
  • Familiarity with Boston's neighborhoods preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including data presentation, preferred.
  • Interpersonal and teamwork skills preferred.
  • Organizational and project management skills preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and must be able to focus on details as required.
