Position Overview:


Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


Assists with internal and external communications of the Boston Public Library. Helps raise the profile and enhance the reputation of the Boston Public Library system and its services to the people of Boston and the Commonwealth. Works under supervision and with established guidelines on projects of the Communications Office.

Marketing & Communications Associate or delegate


Scope of Responsibility:


  1. Assist with coordinating promotional support for library and affiliated services, programs, exhibitions, and initiatives.
  1. Assist with content creation for publication in print and on blogs, calendars, social media platforms, electronic newsletters, and websites.
  1. Assist in organizing documents and other materials for administrative, promotional, and/or research purposes.
  1. Assist with the implementation and maintenance of the library’s brand in accordance with established guidelines.
  1. Assist in summarizing and reporting on library programs for promotional purposes.
  1. Assist in maintaining inventory of promotional and marketing materials for office and public services areas at the Central Library in Copley Square and distributing such materials through the system.
  1. Review draft documents and verify they match brand and editorial guidelines.
  1. Assist with the monitoring of professional award and article-writing opportunities in library industry and other related fields.
  1. Assist with creating presentations and assembly of information packets at the direction of the supervisor.
  1. Assist with the maintenance of photo library and media archive under the direction of supervisor.
  1. Assists with research of industry topics, events, and trends as needed at the direction of supervisor.
  1. Periodically travel to BPL locations across the system.
  1. Performs other related duties as assigned.



  • Identifies, plans and prioritizes job responsibilities and tasks; assists in implementing project timelines.
  • Ability to execute library policy.
  • Demonstrates initiative and appropriate independent decision making skills.
  • Communicates effectively and presents ideas clearly.
  • Ability to collaborate with library staff and external partners.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and web browser.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:



  1. Education – High school graduate or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university preferred.
  2. Experience – Minimum of 2 years’ experience in communications or marketing.
  3. Requirements – Demonstrated use of social media platforms. Comfort taking photos or willingness to learn. Demonstrated experience with basic photo editing and resizing. Ability to travel to BPL locations and as part of a team to off-site locations.



  1. Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  2. Residency - Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
  3. CORI - Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
