Overview:

INDIVIDUALS WISHING TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION MUST COMPLETE THE CIVIL SERVICE LABOR SERVICE REGISTRATION PROCESS FOR THE POSITION AT http://www.mass.gov/hrd/macs IN ADDITION TO COMPLETING THE CITY OF BOSTON CAREER CENTER APPLICATION.  

 

This is a Labor Service position.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under the direction of the Fleet Manager and Superintendent, the Heavy Motor Equipment Repairperson is responsible for examining and locating mechanical defects in a variety of heavy and special motor equipment such as power shovels, cranes, wrecker trucks, heavy tractor trailer and other earth moving equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Disassembles, repairs or replaces work parts; fits new parts and adjusts engines, oil, water and fuel pumps, carburetors , fuel injectors, etc.
  • Operates welding equipment to fabricate, rebuild and strengthen parts and pieces of equipment.
  • Maintains records of time and materials used on each job.
  • Adjusts and repairs air brakes, carburetors, hydraulic pumps, cylinder heads, valves and similar components of all types of heavy motor equipment.
  • Overhauls engines, transmissions and ignition systems and replaces damaged parts.
  • Answers road calls and makes repairs either at the road site or in the garage.
  • Makes minor adjustments and repairs to all types of equipment.
  • Must have ability to use wrecker truck for towing if necessary.
  • Performs related work as required.

Employee is required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner of Parks or his/her designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of paid full-time experience in maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel driven equipment.
  • Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License required. 
  • Must be able to obtain a valid Hoisting License.
  • Must have own tools.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

Must be able to work any assigned shift.

City of Boston Residency Required.

 

Terms:

 

Union/Salary Plan/Grade:   AFSCME/RA1-13

Hours per week:   40
