This is a provisional appointment.

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Health, interprets, formulates and implements programs, new plans and policies pertaining to law and codes as they apply to the Health Division.


  • Oversees the training and plan review protocols in the Health Division.
  • Coordinates field training activities of Health Inspectors.
  • Holds periodic conferences with subordinate supervisors, reviews work progress, recommends new procedures, interprets departmental policies and regulations for the benefit of workers.
  • Prepares periodic and annual reports as required.
  • Conducts hearings of violations and of health law and codes.
  • Prepares/prosecutes court cases.
  • Consults with public and private agencies regarding local health problems.
  • Acts as head of the Health Division in the absence of the Assistant Commissioner of Health.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have a minimum of four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or technical experience in the enforcement of codes, of which two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
  • Considerable knowledge of The State Sanitary code, regulatory techniques, and principles and practices of training and supervision preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Google Suite and Excel strongly preferred.
  • Proven organizational skills, as well as strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work independently under deadline and with sensitivity to confidential matters.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and managers.

Boston Residency Required.
