Brief Job Description:


Under the supervision of the Superintendent of Fire Alarm, the CAD System Manager is responsible for the management and support of the Boston Fire Department (BFD) CAD system and CAD system interfaces. The CAD System Manager is to oversee all activities and components related to the successful operation of the CAD System. This individual should possess an extensive knowledge of Boston Fire Department call-taking, dispatching and incident management, and departmental standard operating procedures.


Management, maintenance, oversight and support duties of the CAD System Manager include the following, as they pertain to the CAD system:

CAD Database Management (CAD DBM)


Agency Specific (BFD):

  • Unit records
  • Response Plans and run orders
  • Firefighter and Fire Alarm Operator personnel logon / security


Multi-Agency (BFD, BPD, BEMS):

  • Configuration Records
  • Parameter Records
  • Type Codes
  • Address/ Location Information: Cataloged Alarm File, Commonplace File, Hazards / Special Situations


All other related CAD system data


Manage and troubleshoot CAD system interfaces, including the following:

  • Mobile for Public Safety (used on Mobile Computer Terminals (MCT) in apparatus)
  • LiveMUM (Live Move-Up Manager; analyses citywide coverage for BFD)
  • Digitizer (street box interface to CAD system)
  • CAD Everbridge Interface (CAD-based notification system)
  • I-Net/Dispatcher & 1-NeWiewer (web-based CAD interfaces, used by field personnel for special events)
  • FireHouse Reporting Software; support as requested
  • Fire Station Alerting, support as requested, through Fire Alarm Radio Shop

Oversee, support, and coordinate operations of the Mobile Computer Terminals (MCT) that run mobile CAD system software (MPS) in Boston Fire Department apparatus / vehicles.


First-level technical support, troubleshooting and resolution of all CAD software, interfaces and hardware problems or issues. Work proactively to identify potential issues and recommend/implement preventative solutions.


Maintain GIS software necessary to create and manage GIS data, which is required for successful use in CAD system, including the following:

  • Response polygons
  • Run orders
  • Fireboxes
  • Hazard data


Develop reports and utilities to measure CAD system performance and technical issues, CAD user reports, and CAD incident reports.


Serve as CAD lead to oversee installation, maintenance, and on-going implementation of Intergraph CAD software, hardware, and interfaces, as they relate to CAD system operation. This includes maintaining full operation of the following:

  • Fire Alarm Operations Dispatch Center CAD software and hardware.
  • Fire Alarm Office Training Room CAD software and hardware.
  • Fire Alarm Backup Room at Boston Police Headquarters, coordinating with Boston Police Department personnel.


Serve as Primary Point-Of-Contact for BFD with Intergraph (CAD system vendor) and interface vendors.


Serve as Boston Fire Department CAD system liaison to Boston Police Department CAD System Administrator, and coordinate efforts to ensure the following functions are completed:

  • Maintain system performance by monitoring CAD and CAD interface software and CAD dispatch terminal hardware.
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly CAD system operation checks. Perform daily, weekly and monthly dispatch terminal hardware inspections and Window’s Operating System functionality and updates.
  • Troubleshoot all CAD system hardware and software.
  • Deal directly with Intergraph (CAD vendor) to resolve any and all issues.


Assist the Fire Alarm Training Officer in documentation and training materials, as required.


Serve as BFD CAD liaison to other city agencies.


Participate in associated user groups and professional organizations.


Willingness to respond on off hours in critical situations.


Performs related work as required. 

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in public safety field, utilizing CAD system.
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Information System Management, or related technical field.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and application, for creating and managing GIS data.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft SOL Server platform and writing SOL queries.
  • Methods and techniques of hardware and software installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Principles, practices, methods, and techniques used in functional and system analysis.
  • System support with complex, integrated systems.
  • Self-directed and able to perform task with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to generate concise technical reports.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.


Boston Residency Required.
