Brief Job Description:

 

The City of Boston, Department of Innovation and Technology  (DoIT), is seeking to hire a Director for its Virtual/Cloud Services Team. This role will manage the server admin team responsible for monitoring daily operations of the virtual, storage, backup, and cloud environments, including hardware, software, operating systems, backups, and storage. This role must keep up to date on industry best practices and advances in technology, including evaluating and  implementing new technology as necessary. This role will work closely with other teams in DoIT, inducing the Service Desk, Networking, IT Security, and Enterprise Applications to deliver high quality IT services for the City of Boston.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical leader provides thorough leadership and drive execution excellence.
  • The Virtual/Cloud Services team is responsible for the Level 1 & Level 2 day-to-day operations of server and storage services. This would include SLA management, system administration, backup management, storage allocation to customers, audit reporting, compliance, version control, etc.
  • Manages a team of 6 - 8 system/server administrators.
  • Aligns IT infrastructure with current and future business requirements and goals.
  • Manages relationships with vendors and support partners.
  • Reviews, maintains, and establishes standard operating procedures and policies for daily and critical operations, including SLAs and OLAs.
  • Stays abreast of new technologies and advances in current standards and best practices.
  • Participates in short term project work as assigned.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a Technology Manager, of which two (2) years must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • A bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science or a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. Supervisory experience may not be substituted.
  • Knowledge of current windows server operating systems, configuration, optimization, automation, patching, troubleshooting, licensing. 
    • Preferred additional knowledge of other operating systems: Linux, Unix, 
  • Knowledge of and experience managing the following enterprise infrastructure: 
    • Microsoft Active Directory environments, including Azure Active Directory
    • Virtual server environments
      • VMWare experience/knowledge preferred
      • Microsegmentation within virtual environments
    • Storage environments, NAS, SAN, VSAN
    • Backup/archival environments
    • Virtual desktop environments
      • Windows Virtual Desktop preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience with enterprise management tools
    • Microsoft System Center (SCCM, SCOM) preferred.
    • Microsoft Intune / Endpoint Manager preferred.
  • Experience migrating enterprise infrastructure to hosted environments
    • Azure preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience maintaining enterprise IAAS environments, including: cost management, Compute, RAM, Disk, security best practices / RBAC, automation/templating.
  • Strong written and verbal skills required.
  • Self-motivated to improve knowledge and skills.
  • A strong desire to understand the what, why, and how of IT incidents.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.

 

 

Terms: Boston Residency Required; 35 hours per week

Union/Salary Plan/Grade:  MM1-11
