Brief Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Office of Economic Development Small Business Unit Director and in partnership with the Public Improvement Commission, the Boston Licensing Board, Boston Transportation Department, Public Works, and the Inspectional Services Department, the Restaurant Program Assistant is responsible for providing outreach, needs assessment, direct assistance and the delivery of programming and initiatives to all restaurants and food businesses in the City of Boston, with the focus on supporting the execution of the City’s outdoor dining program.



  • Facilitates the strengthening of existing Outdoor Dining opportunities, and launch of new opportunities,for restaurants and food businesses in Boston
  • Facilitates the development of the IPS permitting process and other technology needs for outdoor dining applications
  • Conducts business outreach and needs assessments, with a focus on including women, minority, and immigrant-owned businesses.
  • Provides businesses with supports and provide one-on-one business assistance including:
    • Guidance through the outdoor dining requirements
    • Provides assistance with permitting and licensing requests
    • Connections to appropriate business service organizations for legal advice, financial assistance, business plan development, bookkeeping services, and marketing experts.
    • Provides referral recommendations on requests for loans and other financial assistance
    • Provides direct assistance and/or referrals on requests for additional City services
  • Develops formal and informal partnerships with external business organizations in order to better leverage and coordinate business assistance resources
  • Provides administrative support of grants related to supporting Boston’s Outdoor Dining program
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience, managing neighborhood business improvement, small business development and assistance, or related activities.
  • An associates degree in business or public administration, business, marketing, finance, or a related field preferred and may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Familiarity with Boston’s neighborhoods and direct experience dealing with neighborhood businesses’ needs preferred.
  • Familiarity with city services.
  • Strong customer service skills, organizational skills, including rapid and quality follow-through.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and experience with other field related programs/software preferred.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as necessary.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job. 

Boston residency required.
