Brief Job Description: (essential functions of the job):


The Executive Director serves as the chief administrator of the Veronica B. Smith Senior Center. This position is responsible for the planning, organization, and administration of the senior center in accordance with the participants’ needs, government regulations, and center policies and procedures.  The position requires a combination of administrative, managerial, program development and implementation as well as direct service skills with a commitment to working with older adults to improve their quality of life.  


  • Oversees the Veronica B. Smith Senior Center; manages, coordinates, and evaluates center operations by developing and implementing goals, objectives, activities, and strategic initiatives. Ensures program compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Works with center Board of Directors to identify, organize and facilitate programming; provides status reports.
  • Plans, organizes, assigns, reviews, evaluates and directs the work of Center staff and volunteers. Supervises staff and volunteers to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Prepares, compiles and maintains all reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Evaluates center services and programs and recommends improvements. Reviews and recommends policies and procedural changes.
  • Manages all Center communication and promotion efforts.
  • Oversees all Center outreach efforts.
  • Prepares periodic statistical reports pertaining to grants, center activities and programs.
  • Maintains current knowledge trends and advancements in program planning and implementation.
  • May represent the Elderly Commission in meetings with business and professional organizations, community groups and the public.
  • Ensures Center is performing according to strategic and operational goals.
  • Handles questions regarding Center programs available for older adults.
  • Ensures staff is properly trained and follow policies and procedures.
  • Complies with the City of Boston Policies/Procedures protecting client information and the confidentiality of the information in accordance with the Federal and State regulations.
  • Assists with Commission events as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Minimum five (5) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the support of human service programs, including social work, program management, and customer service, of which one year should have been in a team leadership, mentoring or supervisory capacity.
  • Associate’s degree may count for up to one (1) year of required experience, bachelor’s degree may count for up to two (2) years of required experience, and master’s degree may count for up to three (3) years of required experience. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Ability to work independently; to show flexibility and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and think strategically.
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with government agencies, social service agencies, community organizations, and older adults highly preferred.
  • Experience working with funders, preparing grant and progress reports preferred.
  • Experience with Volunteer recruitment and management.
  • Knowledge of budget principles preferred.
  • Knowledgeable about issues related to aging.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to give team feedback.
  • Strong problem solving ability.
  • Demonstrates proper use of databases, and other tools to ensure citizens are provided with all available services.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Compliance to documented policies and procedures.
  • Experience in typical office software systems (Microsoft Office or equivalent) preferred.
  • Bilingual candidate preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a current MA driver’s license
