Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


Incumbent is responsible for managing and overseeing all Volunteer programs for the Commission.  This position will administer all aspects of the Commission’s Volunteer programs including planning, organizing, recruiting and controlling program activities.  This position will also oversee all program grants and manage a plan for increased program engagement. This position will have recurring access to vulnerable population as defined by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).


  • Manages the Commission’s Volunteer programs. 
  • Reviews and recommends policies and procedural changes.
  • Writes and manages volunteer program grants and ensure compliance. 
  • Manages, coordinatess, and evaluates volunteer program operations by developing and implementing goals, objectives, activities, and strategic initiatives; ensuring program compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Sets direction for the unit and manages service delivery and quality. 
  • Oversees all volunteer recruitment plans to meet program goals and objectives.  Travel as required.
  • Prepares, compiles and maintains all reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Serves as liaison between the Commission and the Corporation for National and Community Services (CNCS).
  • Establishes program protocols to ensure mutual understanding between the Commission, area stations and volunteers.
  • Presents and provides information of Volunteer programs to Boston residents including older adults and caregivers; coordinate and administrate training workshops for Volunteer program staff.
  • Travel as required.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Minimum four (4( years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the support of human service programs, including social work, program management, and customer service, of which one year should have been in a team leadership, mentoring or supervisory capacity.
  • Associate’s degree may count for up to one (1) year of required experience, bachelor’s degree may count for up to two (2) years of required experience, and master’s degree may count for up to three (3) years of required experience.  
  • Ability to work independently; to show flexibility and adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and think strategically
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with government agencies, social service agencies, community organizations, and older adults highly preferred. 
  • Experience working with funders, preparing grant and progress reports 
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports
  • Ability to give team feedback.
  • Strong problem solving ability.
  • Travel within Boston may be required in support of the position’s responsibilities
  • Demonstrates proper use of databases, and other tools to ensure citizens are provided with all available services. 
  • Compliance to documented policies and procedures
  • Experience in typical office software systems (Microsoft Office or equivalent) preferred.
  • Bilingual candidate preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a current MA driver’s license.
  • Subject to CORI, Sex Offender Registry, Finger Printing, and a Criminal Background check.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
