Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Responsible for the management and quality control of the bibliographic, authority and holdings databases of the Metro-Boston Library Network.  Acquires MARC records and provides original cataloging for member libraries. Performs advanced descriptive and subject cataloging and classification, including more complex, professional original cataloging and classification, which may require special language and/or subject knowledge.

 

Reports to

Metro-Boston Library Network Administrator and the Chief of Cataloging.

Supervises

As assigned, professional staff, library assistants, and part time staff.

Responsibilities:

Scope of Responsibility

 

  1. Oversees acquisition of MARC records for MBLN members.
  2. Performs advanced descriptive and subject cataloging and classification work, which may require special language or subject ability.
  3. Coordinates the authority control work with the BPL Chief of Cataloging, or delegate.
  4. Works with BPL Chief of Cataloging or delegate and MBLN members to recommend, establish and implement standards, processes and procedures for network bibliographic services.
  5. Works with member library staff to help make the best use of the bibliographic related modules of the integrated library system.
  6. Coordinates bibliographic training for member libraries. 
  7. As necessary corrects mistakes in the MBLN database/catalogue and reviews and revises MARC cataloging records.
  8. Oversees efforts to assure database quality control and coordinates with BPL Technical Services and other member libraries to achieve this goal.
  9. Writes documentation and training aids on such standards, processes, and procedures for use by member libraries.
  10. Coordinates statistics regarding MBLN Bibliographic Services activities.
  11. Works on public service desk as assigned.
  12. Performs related and comparable duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

Education 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized college or university and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent from an accredited library school.

 

Experience 

  • Four years of professional experience in descriptive and subject cataloging are required.
  • Demonstrated experience and superior knowledge of current standards and practices in all MARC21 formats required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current AACR2 and LC Rule Interpretations.
  • Relevant language and/or subject knowledge or specialized training required.

 

Requirements 

  • Experience with automated national bibliographic utilities including OCLC essential.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly in a team environment.
  • Supervisory experience. 
  • Working knowledge of integrated library systems, authority control, and cataloging of serials and electronic resources.
  • Experience working in a consortium environment preferred.
  • Residency - Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
  • CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
