Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


Under general direction, has responsibility for the inspection of new building construction and building modifications and repairs to insure compliance with the State Building Code and related laws.


  • Plans, directs and supervises all activities of the construction division. 
  • Supervises the handling of all complaints related to new building construction and building modification and repairs. 
  • Examines and approves violations reports for prosecution in court.
  • Consults with property owners concerning necessary wall repairs caused by demolition of  adjoining property.
  • Instructs subordinates in proper procedures and methods of inspection; makes personal investigations of unusual conditions brought to his/her attention by inspectors, inspects and investigates all building reported as dangerous and recommends appropriate action.
  • Determines conformance with applicable provisions of the State Building Code, as amended with Chapter 143, G.L. as amended and the regulations issued.
  • Consults with architects, contracts, and other on matter of construction and safety; on terms and conditions of permits; on requirements of building plans and applications.
  • Responsible for additional supervisory duties including employee evaluations, decisions on probationary employees, group training of current building inspectors, conducting staff meetings, interviewing new inspectors and making hiring decisions, training new employees, and recommending discipline.
  • Performs related work as required. 

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least six (6) years of supervisory experience in construction or building inspection is required.
  • A BS in civil engineering or related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • A thorough knowledge of the various types of building construction, and of building materials, and methods of incorporating such materials in building construction, a working knowledge of building practices in the alteration and construction fields, a working knowledge of the principles of building construction so as to  determine the structural safety of a building or structure.
  • Experience with training of subordinates.
  • Certified as a Building official preferred.
  • Oversees and maintains evaluation of subordinates.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word for Windows and Excel is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Hansen software system preferred.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal requirements; of the state building code and/or amended with respect to the building and structures; of the Boston Zoning ordinances; and of the state, federal and local standards and restrictions applicable to building plans and applications.
  • Must be able to read and interpret building plans, drawings and specifications; and to review building applications in order to ensure they comply with applicable laws, ordinances and regulations.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
  • Applicants meeting the minimum entrance qualifications will be considered for this position.
