This is a provisional appointment.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the position):

 

This position is in the Criminalistics/Trace Evidence Section of the Laboratory.  Under the direction of their supervisor, the Criminalist will analyze items of evidence, perform biological screening and process crime scenes. 

Responsibilities:

Before assuming casework responsibilities the Criminalist shall complete a comprehensive training program. Perform analysis on casework samples including general evidence examinations, biological fluid screening, and crime scene processing.  May perform analyses on other types of evidence included within the Criminalistics and Trace Sections. May also perform analyses such as but not limited to primer gunshot residue testing, gunshot residue for distance determination, bloodstain pattern analysis, and footwear pattern collection and comparison.  Performs data analysis, report writing, evaluation of casework samples for CODIS eligibility, and technical/administrative review of other competent analysts' work.  Provides effective expert testimony in court.  Contributes to validation projects.  Maintains laboratory records and prepares written technical reports of analysis. 

Maintains quality assurance and quality control records within the laboratory. Contributes to lab activities to maintain the lab’s accreditation status. Provides assistance and training to assigned staff.  Evaluates and implements new scientific techniques. 

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Minimum four (4) year bachelor's degree in a natural science, forensic science, or closely related field. A degree in chemistry is preferred. 
  • No professional experience required.
  • Entry level apprentice/trainee.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with one year laboratory experience or six month applicable laboratory experience and a graduate degree that includes relevant laboratory coursework.

  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.

 

To verify relevant coursework, college transcripts must be submitted with application/resume.

 

CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK REQUIRED.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG AND PHYSICAL ARE REQUIRED.

BOSTON RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED.
