Brief Job description (essential functions of the job):


The Press Assistant works to support the development and implementation of the Mayor and City of Boston’s communication strategies. This position will assist the Mayor’s Press Office in managing communication activities for various departments, coordinating short and long-term media strategies and the drafting of written materials, including press releases, media inquiries, press conferences, speaking engagements, graphic design, videography and social media activity.

The Press Assistant should be a self-starter who is able to manage a project from development through completion while meeting tight deadlines. Priority will be given to applicants who have some previous experience in public service, public relations, media or government. Bilingual candidates who possess translation skills are preferred.


The general duties and responsibilities of the position are included in, but not limited to, the information listed below:


  • Assists with the drafting of written materials, including press releases, statements, op-eds, media advisories, talking points, local columns and briefing material.
  • Develops a communications strategy for working with neighborhood media outlets and college newspapers that supports the Mayor's priorities
  • Monitors social media activity related to the Mayor and City of Boston, and suggests content for Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other channels, including videos and graphics
  • Tracks incoming media inquiries and provides support to the Mayor's Press Office in responding to those inquiries on a timely basis
  • Attends some public events to assist with staffing for the mayor
  • Compiles daily news clips for the mayor, cabinet and department head review
  • Responsible for updating approved press materials on the website for public review
  • Begins to cultivate and manage press relationships, prioritizing neighborhood and college media outlets
  • Manages the internship program for the Mayor's Press Office
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent, part-time experience in office or business administrations or related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in political science, communications, journalism or related field.
  • Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, high pressure environments.
  • Experience meeting firm deadlines and delivering projects on time.
  • Knowledge of social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and other emerging social media platforms.
  • Bilingual applicants encouraged to apply.
