Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


The NutritionAdvocacy&Planning Director is responsible for managing and overseeing senior nutrition program, which includes program and fiscal monitoring.  Incumbent will work collaboratively with community and government partners to promote best practices for the nutrition services program and elevate elder nutrition issues. 


  • Organizes and leads request for proposal process for nutrition program that reviews bids pertaining to food service, programmatic and fiscal matters.
  • Analyzes cost effectiveness of nutrition programs by reviewing food, labor, and other costs. Reviews staffing structure and workflows the kitchen, programmatic or transportation areas.
  • Conducts state food safety training for all nutrition programs and providers as needed, while also conducting kitchen assessments.
  • Promotes the development and provision of culturally appropriate congregate and home-delivered meals based on the older adult’s individual needs, including efficient service delivery of federal and state funded elder nutrition program in the city.
  • Works with state nutrition director to strengthen linkages with Title IIIC Nutrition Program and health care providers.
  • Identifies and researches current and emerging nutrition issues pertinent to improving quality and efficiencies in service provision to positively change Boston elder’s nutrition status.
  • Oversees the development, coordination and implementation of nutrition awareness strategies and activities (utilizing existing Commission and community projects) and advocate for senior services and resources to address unmet needs.
  • Acts as a catalyst to develop and maintain relationships with other city departments, academic institutions, federal, state and privately funded nutrition programs, and other external organizations to develop nutrition programs policy recommendations and to promote nutrition initiatives.
  • Establishes, convenes and oversees a Nutrition Council of seniors, service providers, funders, marketing and educators and serve as staff liaison to maintain and enhance relationship with committee.
  • Serves as in-house elder nutrition specialist and information resource for Commission and City staff; conduct staff training and community presentations as needed.
  • Responsible for maintenance and training of the Senior Information Management System (SIMS) as it pertains to nutrition.
  • Manages data input; compiles and analyzes reports.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicant must have at least (3) three years of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience in human services, elder services and nutrition services.
  • Associate’s degree may count for up to one (1) year of required experience, bachelor’s degree may count for up to two (2) years of required experience, and master’s degree may count for up to three (3) years of required experience.
  • Ability to assess, interpret and communicate the macro and micro pictures of elder nutrition
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and think strategically
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with government agencies, social service agencies, community organizations, and older adults highly preferred
  • Ability to work independently; to show flexibility and adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong problem solving ability.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports
  • Demonstrates proper use of databases, and other tools to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Ability to give team feedback.
  • Travel throughout Boston may be required in support of the position’s responsibilities
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Compliance to documented policies and procedures
  • Proficient in typical office software systems (Microsoft Office or equivalent) preferred.
  • Registered or Licensed Dietitian required.
  • ServSafe Certified preferred.
  • Bilingual candidate preferred.
  • Subject to CORI check.
  • Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts drivers license.
